Mathematics has been practiced since antiquity but the number of mathematicians and who has had the means to become one certainly has changed dramatically throughout that time

It seems to me that a solution to encouraging AI 'alignment' would be to hold AI companies and their executives legally liable - criminally, if relevant - for what their AI agents do.

I think anthropomorphizing language is not as bad as people say generally but it does serve in these cases to alleviate some responsibility from the companies. If I had given a push random button program full access to my computer and it did something illegal I wouldn't have much of a defense

I'll be giving a short talk at the International Category Theory Conference at Johns Hopkins University on Monday. If that's the sort of thing you'd be interested in watching, I believe there will be a way to view the talk online. See ct2026.com/ct/abstracts...

Excited to share that our paper, "Semantics for 2D Rasterization" was accepted at OOPSLA'26! https:// arxiv.org/abs/2603.23696 I will be presenting this work in Oakland at OOPSLA'26, so lets chat if you are interested in languages for graphics!

Semantics for 2D Rasterization
Rasterization is the process of determining the color of every pixel drawn by an application. Powerful rasterization libraries like Skia, CoreGraphics, and Direct2D put exceptional effort into drawing...

This is something, as an aside, I am prepared to be amused explaining to the younger generation that you used to need to change a normal lightbulb about three times a year if it was on most of the day. Whereas at worst you need to change a modern LED, like, once every three years. Often longer!

I wanted AI to solve my chronic medical problem, not the problem of my enjoying thinking about math within a community. But I suppose if I were a medical researcher, it would be just the reverse. I celebrate today on behalf of slow and unproductive medical researchers.

This is the standard union-busting trope, “Our workplace is a family and a union would disrupt that.” A few words are swapped tomake it about mentorship, but that’s it. And as a former unionized grad student who now supervises unionized grad workers, let me state the obvious: It’s nonsense.

Super pumped to have interviewed Loic Pujet for a new episode! We talked about extensionality in type theory, which comes up a lot in practice (and in theory). open.spotify.com/episode/5B8u... as usual, the RSS: anchor.fm/s/db787130/p...

Tell them what you are going to tell them. Then tell them. Then tell them what you told them [<- this is the conclusion] So if you are at the point where you think, "I can stop here" then write a paragraph summarizing the journey for someone who was only half paying attention.

Sorry I didn't mean people don't die from scurvy. I meant that I was surprised that scurvy was so common because you always hear about it in naval contexts specifically. I didn't realize it was also common otherwise

Interesting I always heard of scurvy mentioned related to sea travel, which is kind of the opposite of "eating locally"

Max S. New @maxsnew.com · 18/07/2026
They would die from scurvy though? That's what surprised me

Max S. New @maxsnew.com · 18/07/2026
Yea I just never heard of scurvy being that common. Always heard it as a problem with sea travel which is kind of the opposite of "local eating"

I think you are reading too much into it I was just surprised by saying that eating locally would cause with scurvy which I associate with sea travel where you are not eating locally

I know people died of all kinds of diseases but scurvy I've only ever heard associated with sea travel when you don't have access to a variety of foods. I guess the implication is that if you have a bad season you could have a shortage of fruits/vegetables?

in a lot of ways the current republican government is just the worst, extractive red state governance taken national. total hostility to public goods, total indifference to long-term investment, and a monomaniacal interest in using the state to enrich private benefactors

This is just straightforward white nationalist great replacement rhetoric, the kind of thing that would have been confined to neo-Nazi forums a decade ago. Multiple mass shooters in recent years believed exactly this.
