This is *not* the result of "the success of Mahmood's reforms", but of earlier measures/other factors. Her proposals could make it considerably *worse* in future years. A few other points linked below.. archive.ph/0psJ8
Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.

Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration significantly undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana Mahmood’s reforms, which have seen net migration cut to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Labour sources familiar with the budget process, however, said that the figure was now closer to £6.5bn. The OBR’s migration forecasts have been consistently higher than real numbers in recent years.

Treasury officials, who have long expected Mahmood’s reforms to cause a hit to headroom, described the number as “pure speculation” but did not deny that Healey would have to contend with a larger funding gap than expected because of falling migration

Does this make sense to anyone else. I follow what he says up to the last 3 sentences. @gavinjackson.bsky.social do you get this?
The second repeated error is obsessing over one side of the ledger. Ramming net zero down UK company throats when the country only produces o.8 per cent of the world's carbon is nonsensical, for example. Total emissions are what matters. A reduction there is the same as a reduction here. With debt, however, the distribution does count. But for the planet as a whole there is no problem. My liability is your asset and they match. Always look at both columns of any balance sheet.

Think it's important to grasp that when people like Ovenden use phrases like "rapidly medicalised layabouts" they get a little thrill like they're daring to break taboos, but actually they're repeating the tiresome but orthodox belief of their coterie. (Cf his treatment of Diane Abbott.)

Others will have their say about this, but I think it’s worth pointing out that this - or laundered versions of it - are accepted wisdom amongst a big chunk of our political and media classes and it is simply bad for society when the elites have little or no understanding of *the systems they run*

*extremely tired voice*AI agents don't "go rogue". They are not sentient; they don't have agency. They work within guardrails set by humans. If the humans are so shit at building secure sandboxes for the agents to work within, that's on the humans. Stop using this framing.

The first two were good things not bad things.
Bad stuff happens in September. For some reason, it is a month that has had more than its fair share of financial crises, perhaps because problems that have been bubbling away come into sharper focus once the summer holidays are over. Britain came off the Gold Standard in September 1931. The pound was turfed out of Europe's Exchange Rate Mechanism in September 1992. And 18 years ago this week, the collapse of Lehman Brothers plunged the global economy into deep recession.

Upton says that Raspberry Pi began manufacturing its first computers in China but reshored production, significantly improving the interplay between design and manufacture. "People have the wrong idea about China. People think you cannot compete with them in high volume. But with robotics it does not matter where you are,"
