i know a lot of people really, really want gaza to be a two-sides issue that maps cleanly onto US electoral politics, but it isn't. the mainstream of both parties supports the genocide, because the US as an institution supports the genocide. i know that's uncomfortable but you can't run away from it

This iced coffee discourse is bonkers. Y'all love making rules up to torture people you have power over, don't you? Coffee? the thing that's normal everywhere? I've brought coffee to every work meeting I've ever had, interview or otherwise, because I drink coffee when I work. Wtf are y'all about?

My bleak prediction for the future of AI & math is: AI proofs will come first and mathematicians' main job will be to make sense of these proofs. Sort of how pro chess nowadays is making sense of what the computer says and gleaning at its impenenetrable logic. Human mind downstream of the machine.

I'm going to be clearer about what I'm saying here. AI doesn't have to beat us on genuine intelligence to cause humanity unending problems. It just has to look vaguely competent, and be able to beat humanity on sheer volume of output. There are 8 billion people.

I sincerely doubt that we will see such a "genuine" artificial intelligence ever created, but I think the more pressing issue is that even without it, the dehumanisation of machine processes is rapidly escalating for the sake of some profit driven interests.

We're running up against the limits of an anthropocentric concept of "intelligence" when we say today's robots do not have "genuine" intelligence but tomorrow's robots might. A robot isn't a human and it doesn't have our interests beyond those a human programmed it with. That's always been the case.

Agree with this but with the caveat that "enjoy the camps" is also a straight up revenge fantasy many liberals have about minorities who don't know their place. They want trans people and Palestinians to suffer *because* they blame us for their favourite politicians being bad at politics.

Lots of people call this AI psychosis but it's just revealing a desire for a kind of friendship simulation service you can pay for. This isn't any meaningful kind of psychosis. It's a lack of interest in humanity and a preference for a weirdly shaped mirror that reflects your interests.

We're doing ourselves a disservice conflating the mere naïveté of personifying AIs with the much more severe notion of psychosis. Some people have developed mental illness from interacting with AI and others are wrong about AI's sentience. Being wrong is not a mental illness. Those are two issues.
Screenshot of the first paragraoh of the wikipedia page for the ELIZA effect:

In computer science, the ELIZA effect is a tendency to project human traits—such as experience, semantic comprehension or empathy—onto computer programs. ELIZA was a symbolic AI chatbot developed in 1966 by Joseph Weizenbaum that imitated a psychotherapist. Many early users were convinced of ELIZA's intelligence and understanding, despite its basic text-processing approach and the explanations of its limitations.

I don't want to call out the authors of this otherwise banal economics paper, but when your climate predictions jump from "anthropogenic warming will continue until 2099" to "mammals will go extinct [250 million years from now from tectonic shifts]", it's obvious you asked an LLM to do the research.
Screenshot of one paragraph of the economics article with a number of citations about climate change and a final one by Farnsworth et al highlighted in yellow about mammal extinction. Here's the full text of the image:

Global warming has brought various impacts to human beings, and many scholars have researched this before. From a global perspective, widespread increases in lake surface water temperatures have been documented in recent decades. Globa warming causes evaporation to accelerate, and global lakes warm slower than surface temperatures. Research shows that lake warming is likely to continue from 2021 to 2099 unless a low greenhouse gas emissions scenario occurs ( Tong et al., 2023). Global warming leads to reduced ocean heat transfer Mecking and Drijfhout, 2023). In addition climate change affects the use and loss of nitrogen from farmland differently across the world, with serious consequences for sustaining food production (Ren et al., 2023 ) Also, extreme climate could drive land mammals to extinction during the next
supercontinent aggregation (Farnsworth et al.,
2023). Research has found that carbon dioxide is the main cause of global warming.Screenshot of Farsnworth et al 2023: "Climate extremes likely to drive land mammal extinction during next super continent assembly" in nature geoscience.

And the following sentence highlighted from the abstract: "In ~250 Myr all continents will converge to form Earth's next supercontinent, Pangea Ultima".

Authors: Alexander Farnsworth, Y. T. Eunice Lo, Paul J. Valdes, Jonathan R. Buzan, Benjamin J. W. Mills, Andrew S. Merdith, Christopher R. Scotese & Hannah R. Wakeford

Full visible part of the abstract:

Mammals have dominated Earth for approximately 55 Myr thanks to their adaptations and resilience to warming and cooling during the Cenozoic. All life will eventually perish in a runaway greenhouse once absprbed solar radiation exceeds the emission of thermal radiation in several billions of years. However, conditions rendering the Earth naturally inhospitable to mammaIs may develop sooner because of long-term processes linked to plate tectonics (short-term perturbations are not considered here)). In ~250 Myrall continents will converge to form Earth's next supercontinent, Pangea Ultima. A natural consequence of the creation and decay of Pangea Ultima will be extremes in pco due to changes in volcanic rifting

I was taken by surprise when I spotted Praat in an Entomology paper! If it's good enough for human voice, then why not for the buzzing of bugs? Pinto et al. (2021) in Insects, vol 13.9
Screenshot from the paper showing a paragraph of text, a figure, and the figure's caption.

Text: Frequency analysis was completed on the trimmed recordings using the linguistic software Praat, version 6.1.55 (http://www.praat.org, accessed on 1 November 2021 [79] to obtain the mean wingbeat fundamental frequency for each individual recording. Pitch analysis settings were set to a Gaussian window: window length 6/75 (0.08 s), with a silence threshold of 0.01, a voicing threshold to 0.5, a voiced/unvoiced cost at 0.01, the pitch range set to 100 to 350 Hz, and autocorrelation was selected as the analysis method. The entire spectrogram was highlighted to obtain the mean fundamental frequency for each recording. Visible pitch contours were extracted for each individual recording and provided information on the number of valid (voiced) frames, estimated spreading at the 84% median, and range. Trimmed audio recordings of less than 1000 valid frames were discarded and not included in the analysis (Figure 1).

[Figure shows a diagram starting from of a raw .wav file, illustrared by a spectrogram. From the spectrogram an arrow to "pitch detection", then arrow to a box titled "mean fundamental frequency / wingbeat frequency", illustrated with a classic waveform & spectrogram combo from Praat, and a spectral slice laveled with a fundamental frequency and harmonics.]

Caption: Figure 1. Overall methodology showing transition from raw recording to determination of mean wingbeat frequency for an individual specimen. Example shown is for male C. dubia.

Amnesty International UK report on the anti-rights movement in the UK
EDM 603: tabled on 14 July 2026
Tabled in the 2026-27 session.
This motion has been signed by 4 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.Motion text
That this House expresses extreme concern
at Amnesty International UK's report
entitled A Growing Threat: the Anti-Rights
Movement in the UK, published on 8 July;
condemns its depiction and listing of
organisations defending the rights of
women, girls, children, and gay and
bisexual people as anti-rights on the basis
of them being gender critical; further
condemns its depiction and listing of
organisations of parents and of clinicians as
promoting conversion practices; notes that
organisations depicted as supposedly anti-rights includes many grassroots women's rights organisations doing vital work domestically and internationally with vulnerable women and children, and a rape crisis centre and support service for female that gender critical belief is a protected belief under the Equality Act 2010 and reflects the views of the majority of the public; also notes that it is perfectly
survivors of male violence; further notes
legitimate to organise around the protected
characteristic of sex and to offer single-sex
spaces, as clarified by the recent SupremeCourt ruling in For Women Scotland vs The Scottish Government; recognises that such organisation, work and services are fundamentally important; also condemns the report for making unevidenced characterisations; acknowledges the damaging impact of such baseless accusations for the small grassroots charities and organisations listed; and calls on Amnesty International to withdraw the report, issue a formal public correction and apology acknowledging the reputational harm, and pledge that Amnesty staff who hold gender critical beliefs can express such beliefs without fear of bullying or harassment.Antoniazzi, Tonia
