“1st, rather than cut NIH by nearly 40 percent, as the OMB proposed last year, we should double its $48 billion budget within five years. These are big numbers, but if they yield discoveries that trim the nation’s $5.3 trillion health bill by just 1 percent, they will more than pay for themselves.”

I will be reviewing applications this admissions cycle (pending funding). This time, I'll be looking for folks interested in research within our training clinic. We have implemented ROM, and want to build on that infrastructure. Other research is possible; the primary goal is clinical research.

My Fifty Years Thinking about Emotional Consciousness in the Brain
This piece provides an overview of my fifty-year career as a neuroscientist. I spent much of this time trying to understand what emotions are and how they relate to human behavior and consciousness. I am pleased that my work on the amygdala helped bring emotion into the field. But late in the game I changed my views about the amygdala and emotions, causing some unrest in the field. Note that this is a personal, not an encyclopedic, overview of the neuroscience of emotion. In other words, this is my story about emotions and the brain, especially in relation to emotional consciousness.

What matters most for childhood brain organization? We analyzed 649 variables. The answer: Socioeconomics (SES); with brain patterns pointing at sleep & stress as drivers. Even brain-IQ associations were better explained by SES. In Science today: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

In sum, SES dominates childhood brain organization. Zip code matters most. These findings have been at the forefront of my mind daily, with Darwin’s quote living rent free in my head: “if the misery of the poor not be caused by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great be our sin.”

Just accepted at Nature Mental Health: Crises and Opportunities for Psychological Science under Fascism doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/nz42x_v3 1/9
This manuscript has been provisionally accepted for publication at Nature Mental Health.

science under fascism. Nature Mental Health.
 Abstract
Psychopathology research and treatment is at a crucial juncture. Particularly within the
United States, funding for scientific research has been cut drastically; academic freedom is under
attack; and efforts to diversify our workforce and mitigate our field's contributions to systemic
oppression have been banned outright. Ideologies vie for dominance, with reactionary centrism
and institutional capitulation increasingly evident. Gaslighting plays a central role in our politics
(academic, national, and beyond), but it is virtually unacknowledged within our science. At the
same time, diamonds are formed under pressure. Our collective reckoning brings with it the
potential for non-incremental improvements in our ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients.
These improvements arrive in the form of opportunities for paradigm shifts, particularly those
involving acknowledging the gaslighting our field perpetuates; resourcefulness in conducting
research; values-realignment; coalition-building within and across fields and institutions; and
 dissemination and outreach.

NEW: Statement from the PCI RR Managing Board on the withdrawal of Infant and Child Development as a PCI RR-friendly journal, and the decision by Wiley to refuse preprints that have been peer-reviewed by @peercommunityin.bsky.social / @pci-regreports.bsky.social Read here ➡️ osf.io/tn8mh
In 2024, Infant and Child Development (ICD) withdrew as a PCI RR-friendly journal and reneged on three Stage 1 recommendations issued by PCI RR. In addition, Wiley – the publisher of ICD – notified PCI RR and the PCI core team of its decision to withdraw all Wiley journals from PCI and PCI RR, including an additional 9 PCI-friendly journals. Finally, Wiley appears to have banned all of its ~1600 journals from considering submissions that have been previously reviewed by PCI or PCI RR. This statement explains the history of ICD joining PCI RR and developments that led to the current outcome. The PCI RR Managing Board believes that this shift in policy to become “PCI-hostile” renders Wiley journals incompatible not only with community-based preprint review but with preprint archiving in general.
