🚨 NSF is already quietly eliminating the SBE Directorate, despite Congress’ mandate that NSF support the behavioral & social sciences. Steps to counter this are in motion. If you - have an SBE proposal under review - serve on an SBE grant panel You can help! Fill out this form: shorturl.at/xuKw2

Share Your Story: Impacts of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF)
Following the release of the President's Budget Request (PBR) on April 3rd, NSF quickly and quietly took steps to begin to dismantle the SBE Directorate. The Federation of Associations in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) wants to hear about how the SBE Directorate at NSF has supported your research and career. Your stories help FABBS communicate to policymakers and the public what’s at stake when the federal government fails to fund critical sciences. We may follow up for clarification, but we will not share your name or institution publicly without your permission.

Perfect 2mins on the hard fact that 1-1 use of tech in schools around 2010 was bad for learning

T&C Chen Center for Social and Decision Neuroscience
The T&C Chen Center for Social and Decision Neuroscience (SDN) is directed by Colin Camerer, the Robert Kirby Professor of Behavioral Economics. This Center studies how human brains make decisions as individuals, and in groups and during collective action, where knowledge and actions of other people influence how the brain computes social influence. The SDN approach is highly computational—that is, we use mathematical algorithms to approximately describe how people are perceiving the world, processing information, and computing beliefs and valuations in order to make choices. Knowing where in the brain these neural circuits are located enables us to do causal studies (e.g. disrupting brain activity to see how behavior changes) and understand the computational basis of psychiatric disorders.

🚨 New preprint: Contributions of default mode network to subjective valuation and maladaptive decision making (PsyArXiv). We argue the DMN shapes how we value choices — and how its disruption contributes to poor decisions. 🔗 doi.org/10.31234/osf... with @dfareri.bsky.social

What's with the revival of "limbic"? In recent cog neuro textbooks, papers, and scientific talks, I've seen more of the "limbic system" than I have for years. Affective neuroscientists argued that this idea should be thrown out *25 years ago*. Why are we backsliding? #friendsdontletfriendssaylimbic
A quote from Joseph LeDoux's 2000 article titled "Emotion Circuits in the brain." The quote says "The limbic system itself has been a moving target… after half a century of debate and discussion, there are still no agreed upon criteria that can be used to decide which areas of the brain belong to the limbic system… both the anatomical concept and the emotional function it was supposed to mediate were defined so vaguely as to be irrefutable…

In spite of the fact that the limbic system concept remains the predominant view about how the brain makes emotions, it is a flawed and inadequate theory of the emotional brain…"
