“1st, rather than cut NIH by nearly 40 percent, as the OMB proposed last year, we should double its $48 billion budget within five years. These are big numbers, but if they yield discoveries that trim the nation’s $5.3 trillion health bill by just 1 percent, they will more than pay for themselves.”

I will be reviewing applications this admissions cycle (pending funding). This time, I'll be looking for folks interested in research within our training clinic. We have implemented ROM, and want to build on that infrastructure. Other research is possible; the primary goal is clinical research.

My Fifty Years Thinking about Emotional Consciousness in the Brain
This piece provides an overview of my fifty-year career as a neuroscientist. I spent much of this time trying to understand what emotions are and how they relate to human behavior and consciousness. I am pleased that my work on the amygdala helped bring emotion into the field. But late in the game I changed my views about the amygdala and emotions, causing some unrest in the field. Note that this is a personal, not an encyclopedic, overview of the neuroscience of emotion. In other words, this is my story about emotions and the brain, especially in relation to emotional consciousness.

A podcast near to my heart: fact check and dissect airport best selling books that oversimplify our reality. There’s so much pressure in the trade publishing world to write these. Academics are among the worst offenders. This episode on “The body keeps score” is a great example of how-not-to.

What matters most for childhood brain organization? We analyzed 649 variables. The answer: Socioeconomics (SES); with brain patterns pointing at sleep & stress as drivers. Even brain-IQ associations were better explained by SES. In Science today: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

In sum, SES dominates childhood brain organization. Zip code matters most. These findings have been at the forefront of my mind daily, with Darwin’s quote living rent free in my head: “if the misery of the poor not be caused by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great be our sin.”

We found that treatment responders had greater connectivity and network influence in the ventral striatum and amygdala. These findings support a "capitalization" view, where treatment responders benefit from intact circuitry (rather than a deficiency/corrective view).

Previous neuroimaging studies have largely focused on either reward responses or resting state connectivity, neither of which fully reflect a positive mood state. Here, we examined person-centered effective connectivity networks (CS-GIMME) during a positive mood induction task.

Using neuroimaging in an adolescent sample provides a different perspective during a developmental period with robust development in the biology underlying mood.

Matt Mattoni @mattmattoni.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Growing research is linking positive mood to anxiety disorders, with implications in treatment mechanisms (e.g., inhibitory learning in exposure therapy). Findings using self-reported or behavioral measures of positive mood to predict treatment response have been mixed, and all in adult samples.
