Cars have a geometry problem. The massive infrastructure dedicated to them is an illusion of poorly allocated space. Cities run best on walkability, bikes, and transit. The personal automobile has no rightful future dominating our streets. Autonomous, EV, nor petrol.

Are robotaxis really "green"? - "They're EVs!"  Sure, but cars can go electric w/o autonomy. - "They'll be shared!"  Doubtful. Shared ridehail has fizzled. - "They'll boost transit!" Ridehail made the same claim. Nope. In fact, AVs could worsen the environment by inducing much more driving.

It was great to listen to @tomflood.bsky.social ‘s talk on communications and road safety in TCD last night. And I have a letter in the Irish Times today which shines a light on how careless driving is just kinda accepted.
Letter to the THE IRISH TIMES.
Sir, - Seán Canney, the Minister of State with responsibility for road safety, stated at an informal meeting of EU transport ministers in Dublin Castle on Monday that "99 per cent of the people on the roads drive with due care".
May I ask where these roads are? Because they sound idyllic - perfect for cycling my primary-school children to school.
In contrast, on our 2km commute this morning, I counted 11 cars in the bus lane, seven drivers looking at their phones in traffic, one woman putting on her make-up and another eating her breakfast. And at least five drivers speeding at least 20km/h or more over the speed limit. - Yours, etc,
NICK ROYLE, Blackrock,
Dublin.

Buses v cycling? A 🧵... Too often, the bus 'industry' defaults to attack cycling as cause of buses (in London) getting slower & slower. Good to see that somewhat countered here: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-i... by @theguardian.com data team. 1. Bus speeds dropping is a "global problem"... 1/13

6. Indeed, it's marked that actually, there is little to no correlation in London between the delivery of safe cycle routes and bus speeds. Ex-Westminster Council transport lead @maxsullivan.bsky.social covers this with two examples here: movepeople.substack.com/p/do-cycle-l... &... 10/13

As several commenters skirt round & @sebdance.bsky.social says directly "mainly there are just too many cars. So moving people out of cars to more efficient spaces such as public transport, buses and bikes is part of that solution". What Seb doesn't say is road layouts have favoured cars... 7/13

The number of casualties on those public spaces between buildings that we call roads is a choice. A choice for politicians who create an environment that works for all its citizens or prioritises those in motors. It's why 20mph or 30km/h should be the limit where people are.

Speeding doesn't actually save you meaningful time. All it really accomplishes is aggressively increasing the chances that you kill yourself or someone else outside your vehicle. It's a mathematically flawed, entirely selfish risk.

Today, for the second time in about a month, I missed a green light because I was waiting behind a car like a chump, while the driver was not moving for the whole of the green phase - because they were playing on their phone. NB: I have a proper ring ring bell. No effect on transfixed drivers.

Suggested ground rules for the ‘debate’ on 'bad' cycling 🧵: 1) Cyclists or cycling advocates are not collectively responsible for the bad behaviour of individuals. What’s your actual point? You want less cycling or rules that have that effect? Be clear.

5) If you are complaining about being ‘nearly’ hit by a bike or seeing cyclists run reds, but you’ve never mentioned the 29,000 motor KSIs or endemic speeding & phone driving; you’re not serious about road danger, you're just unfairly othering cyclists as a uniquely law-breaking collective

Whenever I walk, bike or drive, I see drivers speeding, blowing stop signs, close passing people on bikes, changing lanes without looking, block bike lanes, run red lights, & playing on phones. Maybe fix the danger caused by multi-ton vehicles before worrying about statistically more safe modes.

Either ban cars in cities/towns, or deprioritise them thoroughly, so that walkers, rollers, and riders always have right of way on every urban street at any time. With a max speed of 5 k/h. They have to travel at speeds that never endanger other lives and can quickly stop every time they need to.
