Up to £464m ‘moved through more than 3,000 UK high street shell companies’
Research shows firms are branded as beauty and convenience but apparently operate in money-laundering and terrorist financing sectors Up to £464m has “moved through” more than 3,000 UK shell companies branded as beauty and convenience stores but apparently operating in the money-laundering and terrorist financing sectors, a new analysis sets out. The companies – listed as hairdressers, barber shops and salons, on the one hand, or mini-marts and corner shops on the other – show “remarkably similar lifespans” of about six months despite their seemingly different purposes. 🚨Elsevier forces out Games and Economic Behavior (GEB) Editor, entire editorial board has resigned, current board only handling new submissions until Nov. 14 #econsky
    Dear Advisory Editor of GEB
We are very sorry to be the bearers of bad news for GEB.
I learned from Elsevier on Wednesday July 28 that, contrary to my expressed willingness to continue, my 3-year contract will not be renewed.
"Moving towards a closer alignment with Elsevier strategic priorities and publishing policies" was offered as the motive for this decision. Requests for explanations, first by me, then in a collective letter by the other six Editors, were dismissed by Elsevier which simply reaffirmed its legal power to make such decisions.
Elsevier then started precipitously its own search for new Editors without input of the Editorial Board.
By Friday August 14 all seven Editors have sent their resignation, requiring a 3-month advance notice.
Therefore, we will continue to manage as before the papers currently under review and the new submissions until Saturday November 14. After this date we will only complete the evaluation of papers still waiting an editorial decision.

Fun fact: USPTO patent data has no restrictions on usage by non-citizens. However, USPTO's Open Data Portal was moved to the ID.me system. The catch: ID.me requires permanent residency or citizenship, shadow banning non-citizens from accessing "open" patent data

In Pung vs. Isabella Cty today, the Supreme Court held that the proper valuation method for determining "just compensation" in a foreclosure of property to make up tax debt does not have to be its "fair market value" (what a "willing buyer" and "willing seller" would achieve).

Me reading the abstract: Well, 'coding error' is a bit strong, isn't it, they just disagreed on some variable coding. Me getting to p. 3: Oh, OOOHHH, OH NO!!!!
B&B grouped the 71 teams into 13 disciplinary categories without providing a theoretical justification for such fine-grained coding. This choice has significant consequences: four of these categories contain only a single team. Consequently, the dummies for these categories identify individual teams, functioning equivalently to team fixed effects. Since ideology is measured at the team level and does not vary within teams, these four teams—and their 80 reported AMEs—are effectively excluded and do not contribute to the estimation of the ideology effect.
