"... in a world of abundance, monotheistic religions are no longer needed, because pleasure need not be deferred, & savings and investment are not necessary. All will be consumption. And daily pleasure." In such a "world of abundance", squirrels instinctively squirrel away nuts, & rightly so.

A typically provocative piece from @brankomilan.bsky.social here, though the valorization of pure consumption and enjoyment over the sometimes painful development of, say, the skills of a musician, artist or writer strikes me as perverse.

Current reading: "Hyperpolitics" by Anton Jager Short, dense, and full of insight. I don't fully agree with his judgement that Trump isn't fascist (by some definition), but there are a lot of wonderful and challenging insights in this book into the disarray in today's public politics.

I’ve been saying this for years: the difference between (western) billionaires and (eastern) oligarchs is that the billionaires enjoy complete impunity, whereas the oligarchs do not. This is the financial dimension of that.

The issue with AI was never that the average wage of the employed might go down. On the contrary, as productivity increases some of that increase will be captured by the employed labor.

Keynes in his 1930 essay "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren" had an aristocratic view of what leisure time (assuming, as he did, 15 hours of work weekly) would imply: reading poetry, going with friends to the countryside, discuss philosophers, evening in a theater, champagne afterwards.

I do not think that having a fifth of working age adults having no paid activity but depending on handouts by the state or by Silicon Valley bosses is a recipe for a healthy society. In today's society, most people dislike or hate their jobs, so permanent leisure seems attractive,

Looking through a report on climate inequality and surprised (not really) by how this graph of carbon emission growth mirrors the @brankomilan.bsky.social elephant graph, which is often said to help explain current global politics. The third graph shows the inequality is more within country now
Graph showing emissions change across percentiles from lowest to highest. 0 to 80 show an increase of around 25%, 80-95 show a decline, over 99 show a large increaseThe elephant graph showing income change across percentiles, with increases for 10-70 percentile and 0ver 95 percentiles, and a slight declines for 75 to 85 percentileGraph showing that in 1990 global carbon inequality was mostly explained by between country inequality, but is now explained more by within country inequality
