I love how crazily abstract Jack Kirby got in the 80s. Even the normal buildings have been given these wild designs.

I like how the whole "Mystique abandons Kurt" plot could have been done lovingly like Moses among the reeds but no, she just looks vaguely disgusted and hurls him down a waterfall.

i think the wilson–nolan stuff was so explosive because nolan-heads are susceptible to the delusion that his stuff is much more highbrow than it really is, and bluesky heads are susceptible to the delusion that they are the number one homework do-ers, and wilson threatened both myths simultaneously

One of my Crank Theories of Everything is that the kind of work that survives and becomes part of the canon are stories that feature internal contradictions, because that means they have a rich text that can resonate with people in radically different circumstances and contexts.

Screenshot from the New Yorker: "There are times when you can sense Nolan’s frustration—not with Homer so much as his own inability to reshape the material into something more than mere spectacle. When Odysseus and his men navigate a course between the stonelike, man-grabbing tentacles of Scylla and the enormous churning maelstrom of Charybdis—or, as they are known in less orthodox translations, Rocky and Poolwrinkle—"

Interview excerpt with Sam Neill:
"If you were to commit a murder, how would you do it?"
"It's got to be big! No slipping something into someone's drink, that's just pathetic. I'd use a steamroller, just leave a stain on the road. There's probably a couple of people I'd put under a steamroller, but I won't say who they are; otherwise, when they see a steamroller coming their way they'll be on full alert. And steamrollers don't go very fast..."

So sad to see that Sam Neill died. I sat next to him on a plane from NZ to Sydney. He was so kind, let me hang in the airport lounge w him (!), told me about his animals, and gave recs on what to do in Sydney and drew me a little map of how to get to Bondi. And was so gracious to fans who said hi.

Great news: The newborn has survived the night and is already curiously observing its surroundings. Mom found an empty raft to leave the pup on while she goes out to hunt/feed. But she's not going too far away and keeps peeking out of the water to keep an eye on Churu.
A newborn harbor seal with dark-spotted silver-grey fur and a pale cream underside lies curled on a carpeted raft, head raised and looking directly at the camera with wet whiskers and a dark glossy eye. A black mooring line crosses the foreground.Close-up of the pup lying on its belly on a grey carpeted platform, eyes half-closed and whiskers fanned out, framed between weathered wooden dock beams.A harbor seal rests belly-down on a carpeted haul-out platform beside a marina slip, its speckled body stretched toward the water. Its mom watches from the water in the background, head poking up beside the red-and-white hull of a moored boat.

Divisibility by seven (1/3). A number n can be written, in decimal notation, as n=10x+y, where y has one digit and x one digit less than n. Since 5 and 7 are relatively prime, n is divisible by 7 if and only if 5n=50x+5y is.

1) They think everyone else is doing it, and they don't want to fall behind or feel foolish for putting effort in 2) For many, it IS more about the credential at the end than it is about learning 3) Sometimes even people who have good intentions in the abstract will succumb to laziness in the moment
