Great work here from @carbonbrief.org , debunking common myths about solar power. The reason that solar power makes so much sense is fundamental physics - it takes energy in its most useful form, as soon as it arrives on Earth, before it's "taxed" in entropy. Making use of it is a slam-dunk win.

Atmospheric CO2 has passed 430 parts per million. The last time atmospheric CO2 was at 430 ppm was during the ancient Pliocene Era, three to five million years ago, and humans didn’t exist.

Gas boilers now biggest source of air pollution in central London

🚨 NEW RESEARCH: Gas boilers now produce ~72% of NOx emissions in central London. Switching from gas to hydrogen for heating could cost £600M in extra environmental damage vs. heat pumps. Time to rethink urban air pollution priorities. 📄 Read more: pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

It's a myth that "hydrogen combustion produces only water vapour". Burning hydrogen results in harmful NOx emissions. In urban areas this becomes the dominant source of NOx pollution if we switched to hydrogen for heating. Shocking to see H2Heat project financed by the EU peddling such untruths 👇

Does it make sense to rip out a new gas boiler and replace it with a heat pump? From carbon perspective yes: Replacing a new gas boiler with a heat pump in the UK cuts emissions by 77-86%. This includes embodied emissions from manufacturing. A heat pump offset its embodied carbon after 13 months.

Again and again I hear on social media and read in newspapers that gas replaced coal in the UK. That's simply not the case. In 2024: 📉 43% less electricity generation was from gas than in 2000. 📈 Wind + solar increased more than 100x 🚫 Coal is now zero Source is @ember-energy.org

Not long ago coal provided almost 40% of our electricity. Today it is 0%. Coal’s decline was achieved without switching to gas, driven instead by renewables & demand reduction. Wind and solar experienced massive growth as coal entered terminal decline. @ember-energy.org

You've probably heard that "we are stardust," but this graphic breaks it down and tells you what kind of stars your dust came from--and which elements didn't come from stars at all. 🧪 svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/13873/
This periodic table depicts the primary source on Earth for each element: from the Big Bang, massive stars, white-dwarf supernovae, merging neutron stars, low-mass stars, or other processes. In cases where two sources contribute fairly equally, both appear.

Empathy is the emotion that has the power to unite us, & maybe even give us a chance of surviving the nightmares racing toward us. So watching it being deliberately eroded & villainized by a media & politics in the pocket of oligarchs is as terrifying as it is predictable.

Batteries start playing a huge role in some energy systems around the world. Look at California - not long ago you wouldn’t even be able to see the contribution from batteries. Few expected batteries to ever be able to compete. Today batteries can provide more than 20% of peak load in California.

A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting. Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.
Cover from The Economist from two years ago "Say goodbye to 1.5°C; why climate policy is off target". It has a graphic of the Earth with an apple on its head, and a arrow shot through the Earth.
