I will never forget all the cynical gainsaying and disinformation about the strike on Al-Ahli hospital ten days into Israel’s destruction of Gaza. ‘Fog of war’. Almost three years later, fewer than half of Gaza’s hospitals remain even partially functional and there is no fog. Only dust and rubble.

Al Mawasi before Joe Biden decided to be Israel's Santa Claus (image, Feb 2023) vs after (image, Dec 2024). Most of these tents are refugees from Israel's May '24 Rafah offensive-Biden's "Red Line" which, if crossed, he would totally Do Something (he didn't do anything, Rafah was depopulated)

the horrific cornell gang rape case has me thinking about emma sulkowicz who alleged she was raped as a student at columbia in 2014 and never got any justice. it has me thinking about the physical and mental weight young women are forced to carry while their safety is subsumed by male potential.

The Internet, Social Media and AI are facilitating the churning out of obscene atrocity denial propaganda to deterritorialised global audiences in a way that feels unlike any prior epoch, and I feels like nobody in power is even willing to confront that because they expect to exploit it themselves.

There is a genuine incomprehension amongst many journalists and politicians that anyone might care sincerely about Palestinians or seriously object to their indiscriminate slaughter. The natural human response to this genocide is something they simply cannot understand.

The youngest person his pager attack killed was 9-year-old Fatima Abdullah, who had just started 4th grade. The pager was on a table when it went off and she picked it up to take to her dad. It exploded in her face and reports said it covered the room in her blood. She wanted to learn English.

I think once black clad men are interfering with rescues at sea, we are past "legitimate concerns". Once they're attacking boats, and risking the lives of everyone on board, it's just thuggery. The Home Secretary's statement is on the side of criminals. There's no other way to read it.

This shows the reality of Gaza in shocking resolution. I've scraped and exported all the imagery, totalling around 2.5 billion pixels at 13cm resolution, for safe keeping, in case they decide to take this imagery offline. If this happens, keep an eye out for access.

"AI buildout is inflationary with an unknown return for the companies who are investing trillions into compute." This junks any argument that neoliberals limit public investment to limit inflation. They'll throw the economy on the pyre when their wizards tell them to.
a tweet, second in a thread, by Jurrien Timmer, director of global macro at Fidelity investments, reading: "Yes, AI will change our lives (for the better I trust) and down the road it may well unleash a productivity miracle that raises the economy’s non-inflationary speed limit enough to keep the world’s mounting debt burden sustainable. But until then the buildout is inflationary with an unknown return for the companies who are investing trillions into compute. The demand for capital (equity and debt) from corporates is rising at a $3.3 trillion clip. 🧵(2/2)" and annotated with a graph making the point very clearly

Soon it'll be a decade ago, but in 2017 Australia's News Corp papers enacted a campaign of bullying against @yassmin.bsky.social for criticising war commemorations' narrow focus. I covered it at the time on my blog: quantifying the volume of coverage -> ketanjoshi.co/2017/05/14/p...
many thousands of words on a facebook post It’s hard not to feel a little unnerved by these serious and impactful attempts to chip away at public participation. The Australian, the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail weren’t using their power to call out the powerful.

You might expect there to be some moral calculus or ethical consideration here – but the criteria for engaging on a sustained attack on like the one above are simple. You need to be foreign, Muslim or poor, and you need to be outspoken. It’s happened many times before – usually triggered by someone appearing on the ABC’s Q&A.

The cost of speaking freely, in these instances, isn’t determined by a large collection of distributed individuals on a social media platform; nor is it determined through a slow and deliberative process of introducing and passing legislation. This is a process triggered simply by the decisions of a few people in an office.

As I discussed in my previous piece, the flurry of articles and the arterial flow of Andrew Bolt / Tim Blair blog posts supporting them tend to have a real impact on social media. Sustained, angry abuse lasts longer than the initial burst of outrage. These outlets are shining a bat signal to their audience – this is what you need to be furiously unforgiving about. In these instances, immense power isn’t used responsibly, or with consideration for the human cost of their actions.

Major parties are tentatively toying with the political benefits of racism, again. Social media use keeps ratcheting upwards. This mix is perfect for traditional media outlets with vendettas to deploy.

The whole point of Sensible Moderate Third Way Politics is that the right are correct - the justified, natural parties of government, from whom Sensibles can copy and steal and grab the odd spell in the big important chairs. The idea you should fight them as if they were an enemy is insane, to them.

This is particularly sick because kites are a symbol to many Palestinians (particularly Gazan children) of joy, freedom, + peaceful resistance. They are the focus of the late Dr. Refaat Alareer’s poem ‘If I Must Die’, asking survivors to sell his belongings to make a kite so a child can feel love.
If I Must Die
If I must die, you must live to tell my story to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail) so that a child, somewhere in Gaza while looking heaven in the eye awaiting his dad who left in a blaze — and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh not even to himself -
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up above, and thinks for a moment an angel is there bringing back love.
If I must die let it bring hope, let it be a story.
