I def don't have all the answers as to why there is such a persistent crisis/lull cycle in US orchestras, but one thing I do know from my 25 years at the high end of that business is that WAY too many execs and board leaders are convinced there is a magic sustainability formula hiding somewhere.

1298) Hydrabot. Has got a lot of heads. #SmallRobotsRemonstered #Halloween
A robot in the form of a mythological hydra. It has an ovoid body with a banded tail and legs that have clawed feet. Five heads emerge from its body, mounted on sinuous, banded necks. The heads are ovoid too, with large mouths that contain sharp teeth. One head is distracted, looking at a butterfly, one is frowning at the ground, one is smiling, one has its mouth open and another is angry about something. Some have their tongues out, which are forked like a snake's. Text in the top right reads, "Small Robots Remonstered."

If we're only "pacing" and regulating to prevent an imagined future "Superintelligent AI" Armageddon, we're leaving the door open for these people to keep doing all kinds of very real, immediate, present-day harms, and that is exactly what they want. www.sfexaminer.com/news/technol...
Screenshot of text from the linked article above (1 of 2):

Ultimately all the doomer talk distracts from addressing the real problems that AI is causing or exacerbating, he and the other critics said. The data centers used to train and run the models are increasingly contributing to climate change because they require vast amounts of energy that in many cases is coming from fossil-fuel plants, they noted.

The models were trained on creative works from writers, artists and others who frequently weren’t compensated for that. And companies have been increasingly using the threat of AI as an excuse to lay off workers en masse.Screenshot of text from the linked article above (2 of 2):

Meanwhile, the development of the systems has empowered and enriched a small number of people leading, working or investing in these companies.

“I don’t know that the AI slowdown that’s being proposed now is really going to get at the heart of what the real issues are, which is the values behind these systems,” Williams said. “The values that drive their development, their proliferation and their use are harmful values.”
