There is a season turn, turn, turn. The Long-tailed Tits always leave here when their breeding season has finished & return in the autumn to begin their hedgerow foraging. I'm not sure of the total flock size today - there were always birds away from the water. We're gonna need a bigger lid. 🦉🌿

🌱 #flowersonFriday Isn’t this extraordinary? It stopped me in my tracks when I spotted it in Wisley’s Hilltop World Food garden last Sunday. It is the flower of the Snake Gourd, an interesting vegetable.
A pure white flower with five petals. Each petal has long white fringes which are curved.

Nemoptera bipennis, one of the Spoonwing family, and one of my favourite insects. I found a small group of them yesterday, the first of the year for me. 😍 #inverts #InsectThursday #Extremadura SW Spain. #wildlife #NaturePhotography #ECK
A black and white coloured insect with a long streaming "tail" is perched on a yellow flower. Its wings are almost translucent, with intricate black markings. They're very narrow by the longish striped abdomen, then widen to a rounded end. Its hind wings are elongated and very thin, again, black with broad white markings. It's facing right, and the background is dark with some lighter patches.

These plants also harvest dew, which condenses out of moist air. Edges and hairs make especially good foci for condensation as they radiate heat & cool faster. This species is from Namaqualand, in southern Africa. 📷: Dipcadi crispum Karel du Toit CCBYNC4 #Asparagaceae #fog #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A low-angle close-up of a patch of Alan’s wild daisies growing through tall grass, with one daisy standing higher than the others near the centre of the frame. The shallow depth of field leaves much of the foreground and background softly blurred, creating a dreamy wash of green tones behind the delicate white petals and yellow centres.

An ancient Greek silver coin depicting a bee! 🐝 😍 Minted in Ephesus, 390-380 BC. Photo Getty Museum #Archaeology
A Getty Museum photo showing a silver tetradrachm (four-drachma coin) stamped in high relief on the obverse of the coin with a bee viewed from above, within a dotted border. It is dark grey silver against a lighter grey background. Relief details include legs, wings, antennae, segmented abdomen and sting. The Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), an abbreviation for ‘Ephesus’, are placed either side of the bee. Diameter 7 mm.

From the museum catalogue:
“The reverse shows the foreparts of a stag kneeling in right profile, looking back towards a palm tree. An inscription to the right reads ΚΑΡΝΩ[Ψ] (‘KARNO[PS]’).
The bee, stag, and palm are all emblems of Ephesus, a Greek city on the west coast of Turkey. This city was an important center of worship for the Greek goddess Artemis, and the images on Ephesian coinage typically promote this association. The bee was originally the symbol of an early Anatolian goddess who the Greeks later identified with their goddess, Artemis; so close was the connection that the priestesses of the goddess were called "honey bees." The two Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), are an abbreviation for Ephesus. The palm tree alludes to Artemis' birth beneath a palm tree on the island of Delos. The stag – an animal sacred to Artemis – symbolizes the goddess' role as protector of wild animals, and may also refer to the sculptures that flanked her cult statue in the temple at Ephesus”

My cohost Rob @robcrank68.bsky.social said “ Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WadersOuttaWater, any Wader that is out of water. The Alt Theme is #Blue, any bird with Blue in its plumage.” I’m going with Dunlins and Bar-tailed Godwits on the shoreline, umm, out of water. 😁 #photography #birds #ECK
A mixed group of Bar-tailed Godwits and Dunlins feed together on the shoreline, their heads lowered as they probe the wet sand with fine bills. The larger godwits stand among the smaller, rounder Dunlins, all reflected softly in the calm surface, creating a peaceful coastal scene.

Experts call for restrictions on pet flea treatments that harm UK songbirds
Chemicals known to affect brains of common garden birds, and to kill unborn chicks, found in most feather samples Conservationists have called for restrictions on pet flea treatments after research found songbird feathers widely contaminated with substances that can damage the birds’ brains and kill unborn chicks. Almost every feather sample tested from five common species of UK garden birds contained either permethrin, imidacloprid or fipronil – all insecticides that are banned for agricultural use but still common in pet tick and flea treatments. Good morning. The #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #Warblers any bird that’s a Warbler. The alt is #RareEncounters birds you have captured least in your camera roll. Good luck. 🤞 I’ve gone with this Sedge Warbler. #birds #photography #ECK
A small sedge warbler perches delicately on a cluster of green seed heads, its warm brown and buff plumage streaked with darker markings. A pale eyebrow stripe highlights its alert eye as it faces right, beak slightly pointed forward. The bird’s body is balanced lightly among the stems, with soft natural light bringing out feather detail against a smooth, muted background.
