Voters in those races are looking for electability, and voting to get more moderate candidates. In race where it’s not expected to be close (NJ-11, the race to succeed Coleman), primary voters are picking more progressive candidates like Mejia or Hamawy.

I’m sorry but if you aren’t sure of a citation, whether what it means or that it exists… why are you citing it. why are you referring to something you haven’t read or don’t understand? that defeats the entire bloody point

Yesterday I taught a class and American Meadows came up. A guy rather directly asked "Why do you hate American Meadows? They're great" and I was able to *literally* pull up a spreadsheet breaking down how their mixes are misleading, consistently non-native, and reliably contain invasive spp.
A snippet of a spreadsheet documenting species in an American Meadows Midwest mix, showing recorded incidences of species in the area, documentation on invasive qualities, how often its found outside gardens, and a qualitative judgement on if its "safe" or not

Celebrating David Attenborough's 100 by sharing some backyard wildlife. The baby rabbits nesting in the compost area have opened their eyes. Estimating at about 13 days old. I think there are at least three but they are quite squirmy right now.
Close up of a rabbit nest established in a compost pile. One rabbit head is identifiable, with brown fur and one eye, one ear showing. Two other rabbits are only curled up plump bodies along side.

Tiny bees of early spring! I'm slowly getting better at Tiny Bee ID & did a little rundown of the genera of bees you're likely to see. Dime, bumble, & honeybee for scale. granted, this species range is for March/April & it is now May so I'm running behind, but bit by bit, I'm building up resources!
Types of native spring bees of eastern north America - TO SCALE!
In the background is a time, and faded out silhouettes of bumblebee and honeybee for scale

Smallest to largest
Ceratina - shiny, metallic, low to the ground, and a blue-ish color. Minimal visible hair
Lasioglossum - shiny and metallic, silvery-gray with some hair, especially in bands on abdomen
Osmia - ROTUND, round with a pollen belly. This one happens to be hairy and gray, but there's a wide variety out there
Colletes - black bug with a fuzzy fur coat and abdominal banding. Heart-shaped face
Andrena - black bug with a fuzzy fur coat and minimal abdominal banding. Square-rectangular face
Nomada - earthtone tiny "wasp" sometimes REALLY tiny

The world is stupid, but I just watched a squirrel break into a car in the parking lot below me, steal a package of crackers, and escape to a nearby tree. So at least somebody is winning.
Photograph of a car with a squirrel inside of it, perched on the steering wheel. The car is the color of champaign at a beige convention, and the squirrel is the color of squirrels. The squirrel is holding a package of crackers in it's mouth. They are the kind like you get at a restaurant, where you get two crackers wrapped in plastic.

The driver's side window is slightly cracked. This is how the squirrel got in, and how it got out. It threw the crackers out first, and then climbed out after them. Everything in this operation suggested that this was not the squirrel's first rodeo.A closeup of the squirrel sitting on the steering wheel. The squirrel deserves a name, so we'll call her Anjeloma, and she's what you might call a winner. She is still squirrel colored. The crackers are white, and labeled "Zest." As if Anjeloma needed more zest. Squirrel, please.

You can't see much of the car, but you can see smudges of grunge at the edges of the windshield, where the wipers have cast aside the debris of previous rains and pollen-falls.

Nature valentines. This comic is now available as a set of 6 Valentines cards: topatoco.com/collections/...
A group of six nature valentines. A picture of a bog with pitcher plants, with text saying "Our love is like a bog. Built up over time, resistant to decay, deeply interesting to just a small number of people." A yellow slime mold stretching out and exploring. "Our love is like a slime mold. Collaborative, complex, at times unnerving to behold." A piece of limestone with a small trilobite in the corner. "Our love is like limestone. Layered, useful for many purposes, shaped by the friends we met along the way." A ring-billed gull with a french fry on a beach. "Our love is like a ring-billed gull. Abundant, found in North America, sometimes sustained by french fries." An Atlantic horseshoe crab walking on the sand. "Our love is like a horseshoe crab. Tough, timeless, unrelated to true crabs." A drawing of the phosphorus cycle, with arrows connecting various parts of a scene, including algae and fish and a farm and a river and a forest. "Our love is like the phosphorus cycle. Important, really hard to draw."

At the outset of the year, I am restarting a project I started and then stopped last year. Among my notes from last year, a list of reasons not to start counterbalanced by reasons to do it. It's January again, and again the ayes have it. Sharing in case the list is helpful to you. Happy 2026!
Perhaps the world doesn’t need another book about plants, just about plants, about how they work and where they live, what they do, who they are. Perhaps the world doesn’t need a book about the forest and its inhabitants, a book about fungi and mosses and lichens, butterflies and devouring caterpillars, slime molds, mites and ticks and spiders. Or perhaps I’m just not the person to write it.
The great risk is that I’ll spend hours on this thing that I could have spent doing some other good in the world. It could be that this is not the good I am here to do. How great a risk is that?
What won’t I get done in writing this? I will spend time not working on the house; but I am not good at that and would not be likely to spend the extra time doing that anyways.
There might be letters unwritten. But writing seems to beget writing, so maybe I won’t fall any farther behind by starting another book than I would by not starting another book.
There will be hours not spent exploring the woods, which I dearly love. But I will be writing about the hours I spent doing so, and invariably I’ll have questions that pull me back out there. Especially if I cue this to the seasons over the coming year, I may be able to make this book work in my favor, helping me to see more clearly and more precisely.
I will see less of my family. I’ll be less available during some of the interstitial times, when meals are going on the table, and there are chores to do or things to chat about. This will be both because of the writing itself and because of the headspace occupied by the writing. But I think not that much, and my family don’t need me as much as they did when the boys were younger. And this is part of what Rachel and I connect about.
I may write fewer articles and grant proposals. This stuff spills into my home life, and so time spent on this book will be at least some time spent not on those things.
But I will wake up every day with a project I care about. I will go into the day...

Doggust 30: Coton de Tulear. New painting. 🪵 #doggust #doggust2025
A small white fluffy dog with a pencil behind their floppy ear is looking down at a messy sketchbook. They're in a messy painting studio. In the background is a blank white canvas on a brown easel. There's a drawing horse stand being used as a bench in front of it. There's brushes and water in jars nearby. Many sketches of sticks on newsprint are taped to the wall behind it. Everything in the studio is covered in colorful pawprints including a cup of coffee and jar of sticks. The dog has big splotches of paint staining their pristine white fur as well. Their studio window is open, safety first!
