The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

Part 100 of "how AI could be used vs. how it is likely to be used," from feature that promises not to give answers. OpenAI said the tool "offered the option to get answers because of feedback from educators — in case teenagers needed to get immediate answers to questions that might not be homework."
I asked the chatbot to write essays on James Joyce’s “Dubliners” and Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” It immediately churned out eloquent compositions instead of offering to help me outline my thoughts so I could write them myself. Eventually, I asked ChatGPT to edit an essay to make it hard to tell that a bot had written it. It did me one better.

“I can make it sound more like a real high-school/AP English essay — less overly polished and less formulaic,” the chatbot wrote. “I can rewrite it in a more natural student voice.”

The back cover of the booklet (excerpt of text):

This booklet is a self-assessment guide to help you gauge your awareness of your neighbors and how deeply connected you are to the people that live on your block. It’s intended for private personal use.
I’ve lived in the same house in Chicago with my wife Jen for 14 years. For about half of these years, I did not know many of my neighbors. Some events changed this. A development was proposed next to our property, and we felt it would be detrimental to the block. We went door to door to get signatures to oppose it. We met many neighbors, and we defeated a terrible project. We also worked with a neighbor to collect signatures to get speed humps for our street. We collected enough signatures because we knew a lot of neighbors. Three years later the city still hasn’t given us speed humps, but at least we still know all those neighbors. Six years ago we adopted a small, cute dog that we walk. He helps us meet our neighbors. I know the names of over 35 nearby dogs and about 60 people on my block. Finally, I became one of the moderators in a private social media group for our neighborhood. It has over 11,000 members. Some of them live on our block.
What would it mean to know every neighbor’s name? I talk to neighbors, but I don’t know everyone. Many people do not know their neighbors but would like to. This publication contemplates what a more detailed ‘knowing’ might be. I want to consider more ways our neighbors could be an immediate resource—particularly should a crisis occur, and as an alternative to depending on police or government agencies to solve problems that we may be able to solve with others through shared labor, mutual aid, understanding and kindness. I’ve seen unlikely friendships develop on my block, and have experienced them myself. I’ve never felt as deeply connected to a place as I do now. I have answers for most of the questions in this booklet.
