sorry, nesting fail. I'll probably delete the post as my (humorously intended) post was meant to imply that Irish people also wish Britain was somewhere else.

gods that is a very tricky one. I've only ever seen brutally insensitive people use this move. best of luck with it.

had a boss who did that, a short-term California transplant to Europe, and it did NOT go down well with colleagues. I believe an intervention was eventually staged by highers up (just on the rudeness, not on multiple other sources of obnoxiousness). Being polite takes <2 seconds. Worth it.

I am of the view that #RSS (or an RSS-like technology) has the potential to be vastly superior for getting news to readers, especially those who are specific about the type of news they want to read, but I agree that a discoverability layer is sorely lacking. ...

oh interesting! I started using pocket cast a few months ago (had lazily used the apple default app beforehand until it started annoying me), but I've never for a moment thought about the protocol layer work being done (and where?) to support access and interop (if not strictly discoverability?).

+1 (and excuse me for butting in) I'm extremely politically disposed to using rss feeds, and every couple of years try again with a new reader and give up for exactly the reason you say.

people keep saying to me "the website as a destination [for humans] is over" "no one is going to read news on websites any more" "search is done". They are pushing for us to change how global voices works. I would love to hear what you all think of that and if you DO appreciate how we work now, why?

Sorry for such a bleak post, but I can't stop thinking about the men who were in that Cornell fraternity and presumably saw the Snapchat message allegedly advertising "free pussy," and did nothing, tacitly allowing their friends to allegedly commit gang rape. Men, your passivity destroys lives.

Characteristically perceptive, generous and <useful> review by @cairdiul.bsky.social: "what makes Sense and Sensibility so perfect for the current moment is that it is an actor’s movie. Most of the dialogue only indirectly relates to how anyone is feeling, and the audience must breach the chasm".

Horrible to see that - in some sense - today's financial survival options for such a singular writer are either 1) accept $175k from a prize that requires you to destroy your fragile health with promotional requirements, or 2) accept $175k with no strings from a rightwing Koch-funded thinktank :-0

I cannot ever forget how the marching bands refused to be silent, as requested, going past the house where the mother of those three murdered boys took refuge in the weeks after her unthinkable loss. A small detail that exposes everything this march is for.

they're generally allowed on French trains (albeit official rules are for them to be muzzled at all times, but that's not typically observed unless big scary dog with actual issues). it's just the london-paris train that is the chokepoint. (the workaround is taxi on eurotunnel and train from calais)

that's a good and very humane policy. it's just about possible that in a few years time when the much-heralded competition on the line is allowed (which will likely lead to the reopening of ashford international) dogs may well be allowed. right now with a monopoly there's zero chance.
