I am actually going to talk about what I call images, or symbols. It seems to me that in our present great drive-fiction-wise-toward the spare, clean, direct kind of story, we are somehow leaving behind the most useful tools of the writer, the small devices that separate fiction from reporting, the work of the imagination from the everyday account. Of these the far most important, and the most neglected, is the use of symbols; I am using the word loosely, because it has altogether different meanings elsewhere, and yet I hardly know what other word to use. The thing I am talking about is best identified by reference to a theory of acting that has always seemed to me very profound, and certainly useful to the writer:
Before entering upon a role, the actor, having of course familiarized himself with the character he is to portray, constructs for himself a set of images, or mental pictures, of small, unimportant things he feels belong around the character.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Those arguing for mass-adoption of AI art always seem intent on proving the wrong thing; that AI tech will change beyond all recognition. They seem less inclined to prove their argument's much wilder claim; that human nature, and all previous modes of taste, emotion and investment, will change too.

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

New Trailer for Zhang Yimou's 'Raise the Red Lantern' 4K Restoration
"After a few days, you won't want to leave." Film Movement revealed a new trailer for the 4K restoration of this 1991 Chinese classic titled Raise the Red Lantern. One of the early films in acclaimed director Zhang Yimou's oeuvre (his 4th feature at the time), this premiered at both the Venice & Toronto Film Festivals in 1991 before opening in the US in 1992. "As visually striking as it is dramatically effective," Zhang's Oscar-nominated Raise the Red Lantern sumptuously captures 1920s China while "subtly exploring the politics of power & control." A young woman becomes the fourth concubine of a wealthy man and soon realizes there's fierce competition for his attention & associated privileges. Starring Gong Li, Ma Jingwu, He Saifei, Cao Cuifen, and Jin Shuyuan. The 4K restoration of Raise the Red Lantern was carried out by the Udine Far East Film Festival on the occasion of its 26th edition. The original image & sound negatives were used under the supervision of Director Zhang Yimou. The vintage positive copy, shown at the 1991 Venice Film Festival and preserved at Venice Biennale's Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts, was used for color reference. The restoration was made in 2024 at L'Immagine Ritrovata. I've seen this film - it's, indeed, truly stunning. // Continue Reading ›
