The @quantitude.bsky.social episode on probability inspired me to create a visual demo of the Monty Hall problem.   What’s the Monty Hall problem? It’s a probability scenario based on a 1960s gameshow. What’s fascinating is that the solution contradicts people’s intuitions about chance.   /1

Journal fees for open access are becoming obscene. But what are we, scientists, paying for? I made a simple plot with journals in my research area(s). Clearly, we are paying for prestige: a shockingly clean correlation between the impact factor and journal fees
A plot showing prestige (impact factor) on vertical axis and fees charged by journals on horizontal axis.

New preprint! How often do editors/reviewers actually compare preregistrations to the reporting in the article? Almost never. This figure sums up all of the results. Not good.
A two-panel figure showing the rate at which editors/reviewers mention the preregistration in their reviews, indicate accessing the prereg, and directly compare the prereg to the paper. The left panel is at the article-level and shows percentages of 43, 14, and 10, respectively. The right panel is the editor/reviewer level and shows percentages of 18, 5, and 3, respectively. These are very low levels.

Make your open materials actually accessible! The need for this recommendation is so frustrating. The frequency of journals and authors "open washing" by making open science claims but having a bunch of broken links is arguably worse than not having transparency at all. #metascience
3. The 20 second rule. Authors (and journals) should ask: "How long would it take a reader visiting the paper's repository to find the pre-registration for Study 2 and the data for Study 3"? If the answer is "more than 20 seconds", the paper is not ready for publication.

Is there an empirical word to explain establishing a pre-causal relationship, but from a blame-perspective? For example, during the 2020 election cycle, Trump often stated, “if I lose this election, then it is because Democrats stole/rigged it.” I am trying to find a literature on this.
