ere we show with three national surveys of non-Hispanic white adults (conducted from 2021 to 2025) that support for white nationalism is (1) higher among white people encountering personal hardship and local social distress, consistent with strain theories3,16; (2) unrelated to local racial composition or recent demographic change, complicating status threat accounts4,17,18; and (3) elevated among white people with close friendships primarily online, consistent with theories of extremism driven by online mobilization7,10,19.

Next I looked at how easy it was to *use* these materials. I found that a good chunk of these repos referenced files that weren't in the repo and used hard-coded absolute paths (i.e., paths specific to the author's machine). Also, less than half of the repos had READMEs or documentation
Two stacked bar charts. Top, code red flags among 333 papers with retrievable code: 34% (114 of 333) hard-code an absolute file path, and 40% (133 of 333) reference a file missing from the repository. Bottom, documentation among 672 OSF-linked papers: 21% (143 of 672) include a README file, rising to 30% (200 of 672) when a substantive project description or wiki counts as documentation. Both panels use a 0–100% axis, so all four bars sit in the lower third.
