Agita Magazine opens for submissions on October 17 for issue 3: ekphrasis. Ekphrasis is the verbal representation of a work of visual art. Weird fiction is a verbal representation of the world, in order to unsettle it. Send us stories at the intersection. Guidelines at agitamag.com/submissions
A black circle. On the outside it says "agita 3" and "agitamag.com." On the inside it says "Ekphrasis, February 1, 2027, submissions open Oct. 17 to Nov. 17, Guest editor Zachary Gillan."

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I can't remember exactly. Maybe it was the creeper trying to peer under the door of a toilet stall when I was on holiday with my family as a girl. Or maybe it was the random group of men on the bus I caught to school, who started saying vulgar things about me in dialect. So maybe... Early teens? 13?

What's also aggravating is that we KNOW that ME/CFS is triggered by catching random viruses at some point in life. Flu, COVID, a cold, it doesn't matter. Once the virus has gone, you're left with debilitating symptoms the whole medical profession pretends aren't real, and they're yours for life.

If I wasn't as online, I'd miss all kinds of valuable info. Like submissions calls - almost everything I've sold, and everything award-related I've done, has come from online subs calls. I'd miss news in publishing. Word of mouth that warns other authors about dodgy behaviour in publishing, etc.

One of my favourite bits from today's drafting of Cemetery Club. Robyn takes Rafe with him, when Robyn goes to the cemetery to visit a grave. Romance, folks, romance. 😂🥰
A screenshot of text:

“I think that was his loss,” Robyn said with some heat. Rafe flushed at his compliment, but Robyn looked serious. Before he added, wryly again, “But I’m hardly showing you a good time now either. If this is a first date anyway.”

“If that’s what we’re doing, at least this one is… Memorable. Meaningful.” Rafe offered.

“Morbid,” Robyn added. They both grinned at each other.

Reuters got some of the IPO docs. Anthropic is a total dog of a company. Spent $12.6bn to make $4.6bn in revenue in 2025, $7.33bn of which was compute costs. Operating loss of $8bn. Losses getting worse year over year. Amazing stuff www.reuters.com/business/fin...
Summary
Companies
• Anthropic IPO could value the company at more than $2
trillion
• Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025
• Al lab spent $7.33 billion on compute and infrastructure last year
• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.
But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the
prospectus.

INTRODUCTION

The equities here could not be more one-sided. Defendants admit that they
provide a service without fully knowing how it works.

This is not just any service. It is one that Defendants themselves concede poses an existential risk to the continued
survival of humankind.

Defendants claim they cannot stop barreling forward with their potentially civilization-ending endeavors unless they are forced to do so by the
government. They have asked the government to tie them to the mast.

Plaintiff brings good news to the Defendants: The Florida Attorney General is answering your
cry for help with a motion to enjoin you from harming Floridians with your reckless, unacceptably risky product.

One of the ways that I think proselytising religions really mess people up is that they are based around the idea that the believer must sell someone their personal beliefs, must correct them, must tell them what to think - and the idea is that that is for the unbeliever's own good.
