The guy straight up said he can't see himself going with "a fully Black woman". And she still wants to marry him and imagines having kids together! Good luck to those hypothetical kids, growing up mixed, with one parent who is gross about half their heritage, and the other parent overlooks that.

The new series of Slow Horses is very good so far. Genuinely tense moments, interspersed with humour, and the characters remain deeply enjoyable.

what jk rowling has done to queer students in the uk
(it's Bad)
as you may know if you follow british politics, there is a piece of statutory guidance called KCSIE: keeping children safe in education. teachers are legally required to read part one of KCSIE every year.
at my secondary school, like many others in the UK, we have a LGBTQ club/GSA. this club is ran by ally or queer teachers and is supposed to be an explicit safe space for students to use preferred names and pronouns.
however, this term, we were told that part of KCSIE this year involves "formal requests to socially transition" leading to a safeguarding process and parental intervention. we can no longer tell our previous safe queer adults our preferred names because they could lose their job and potentially their liscense to teach if it was found out that they didn't follow the reporting process when necessary.
if you're still a part of the harry potter fandom, you are FUNDING THIS. it's paid for from jk rowling's pockets and you're only making them bigger by giving her traction. it's not too late to leave and take a stand

as a trans teen in the uk, i am so serious when i say that if you like harry potter - yes, even if you are "casually"" in the fandom - and are not willing to distance yourself from it, i do not want your company anymore. if you don't denounce jkr and everything she stands for, we can no longer be friends. genuinely. if your childhood nostalgia or your comfort show is more important to you than *vulnerable trans children and teenagers now at more risk of being abused*, stay far away from me. and get a new comfort show

It’d be cool, when reporting on a blind visitor suing over lack of access to the Bayeaux Tapestry, the supposed journalist could make it clear that this isn’t at all a ridiculous request. In fact, it’s completely in line with Equality Act 2010. Museums have provided audio forever.

I've been much happier in general since I started writing romance. It's not that I don't have bad days, bad times, or I don't feel like the world can be terrible. I just also have an outlet, where part of the discipline of writing the genre is to find hope, over and over, alongside all of that.
030
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 01/10/2026
For me, as a writer, it's often good for processing things I'm angry about in the world. Traumas I've had. Fears and grief. Because I'm always also going to give the characters the mutual supports they need to get through that. And they won't just survive. They'll eventually thrive.
120
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 01/10/2026
As long as I can get the characters there in the end, it feels safe to me to explore trauma. Big existential themes. A broken world or society. Even horror. Grief. All of that can be leaned into, as long as I'm also fundamentally writing the story of people finding, comnection, love, and hope.
241
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 01/10/2026
So painful, unprocessed material comes to the surface then, because on some level it's safer for that to happen now, with new supports in place. How that works for romance is that everyone knows there'll be a HEA/HFN. No matter how difficult or angsty things get, there'll be love. Happiness. Hope.
120
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 01/10/2026
Sometimes I think about writing romance the way I do about a stage that sometimes happens in therapy, where it can seem as if clients are decompensating. But that's actually part of processing and healing. It may happen because the person finally feels supported enough to deal with difficult things.

Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 30/09/2026
Building 2, and also their relationship is 3 times the work, because the relationship is its own 3rd character. Interacting with that changes both people. Do that with 2 couples or more (I've done 3 couples, and a longstanding pair in a duology), and you'll just laugh at the idea it's a formula! 😂
000
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 30/09/2026
It never reduces to simple repetition if the writer is doing the work of making each character unique, each relationship specific to these two people, and also showing you every step or the long arc of that developing relationship. It's a lot of work. Building one character alone is a lot of work.
100
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 30/09/2026
If the reader randomly opens a page where (for some bizarre reason) you're not mentioning names, and the couple is talking, or having sex, or fighting, or thinking about each other, and the reader cannot tell which of your couples this is, just from contextual clues alone, you have a big problem. 😂
100
Mae Tang 董美妍 @maetangwriter.com · 30/09/2026
I'm going to add that a side effect of frequently writing two developing couples with interiority in a romance, is that you're immediately pushed to write them both with a great deal of specificity. It can't be the same relationship repeated twice, with similar issues, sex scenes, denouements, etc.
