Renee Magritte
The Son of Man, 1964
Oil on Canvas
Private Collection

Magritte painted it as a self-portrait.

The painting is of Magritte in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a low wall, beyond which are the sea and a cloudy sky.

Magritte’s face is almost obscured by a green apple. However, his eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the apple.

Falling

One yellowing, heart-shaped leaf cannot hold on to the aspen any longer. Green protruding veins still reminisce about Summer. A decorous deception. Nobody can vanquish death.

I observe the aspen heart dance through the air past a few last sunflowers that are reflecting golden hues. Then, it veers towards rugose hydrangea. Perhaps it admires how beautifully they are ageing.

It does not make a difference, I think, as a sequel to memories unravels feelings I hoped had long gone. Now they are towering over me like monuments of shame and regret.

I know they are not mine. It was just convenient to park them in my nervous system. That one, that feels too much and bothersome to others. It seems people can never make up their minds.

Your rasping breath mixes with the aspen's susurration. The effects of the cough syrup must be wearing off. I shake the empty bottle and set it aside.

The dancing heart of gold sails on as I walk into the kitchen to fetch our steak knife. One clean cut takes care of it.

The aspen heart lands the instant the first drop of blood hits the floor.

Pagan Dreams

The empty chair stands like an island amidst the busy fair. Warm lights illuminate the velvety darkness - as if to ward it off. Brown and golden leaves rustle under people's steps. The aroma of coffee percolating next to an open fire with roasted chestnuts is filling the air. A display of roses is bleeding colours onto concrete.

I'm walking in the shadows, watching stertorous corpses ridicule the old rites, pretending to be alive. Somewhere, a man is paying an encomium to the pittance rewarding those who keep this farce running. I'm almost smitten by his stance.

I rid myself of idle thoughts as I see a silhouette dance towards the spare seat. Your reminiscence is still strong. I gasp, then hold my breath in awe.

With my exhale, tension's dam breaks. The tempest is not vindictive. Yet, I'm not grieving the life eradicated from this town.

Mummification

Valour had set sail by the time silver moonlight poured through the window. This spineless sycophant did not even say goodbye.

"Poltroon!"

- He thought, quailing, weary of desire's dreams. Trying to stay awake, he still hoped this grail would pass, tonight. Until he grew weary of hope. Then he grew weary of being awake, too.

The moment he had fallen asleep, Lily rode into the room on a silver ray. She smiled at the sight of this perfectly imperfect human.

Tonight, she did not come to snack.
Tonight, she would come to feast.

Her lips made the gentlest contact with his. Docile, his tongue answered to hers, longingly. Her kiss deepened softly until she got a hard response. Then she rode him. Long. Passionately. Come again? Of course. Harder, each time.

He earned every wrinkle...

Branches brushed lightly against the window at dawn. Right before the sunrise's gold poured into the room. It is rarely spoken of, but the morning does have a sense for elegant morbidity.

Under The Same Sky

A silver moon prepares a black canvas for the canopy of day, as memories surface of a life that once was mine. We were birds of a feather, then, congruous our rhythm, and our hearts a harbour for our love.

A golden dawn reveals what I already know: Everything that once grounded me is gone.

A sunrise, fiery red, reflects the torment of my love's mind, that, one day, he could take no more. When he changed for good, we became foreign birds.

A pink blush in the clouds remembers love. But I don't know anymore the troglodytic things he keeps in his malefic scullery. We used to write our story in tandem. Now I write. He erases.

The blue morning sky finds me mourning for the doors that will stay closed forever. So much to explore that will never be. And soon, those doors will have vanished, too.

This is not autonomy.
It is madness' reign.

Me?
I'm wilting by the window like a forlorn houseplant.

Sabotaged

An autumnal breeze - flavoured with salt, fungi, and bonfires - is carrying a robin's song. It lures me to follow its story. There is courage in the rising gusts and a moment of stillness emphasizes an airless escape.

The bird lived to tell the tale.

The wind picks up and in the rising gusts, I hear something snap. Then the crescendo of a wood chipper. Finally, not only the wind is screaming, but also a human voice.

With it the wind breaks.

The silence, almost deliciously wicked, does not last long. The wind now blows straight. It swallows the words it carries. I can only sense the rhetoric of resonance. This is not alacrity. It is reason lost in the unpredictable effects of wondrous enigma.

This one claimed a life less significant than a robin's.

I stand petrified as, with a loud crash, the wind smites the third tree from the left. By now, my cosmic daydreams have left, as well.

I want to leave.
But I cannot move.

Renovations

A jack of all trades progresses in the macabre masquerade of our brave new world.
Where next steps are coherent with opaque reason.
Where justice is repulsed by the beak.
Where rhyme has fallen in step with insanity.

I remember this one little moment, almost too small to notice.
When bravery quietly blenched.
When skulls were ripped off of their own thoughts.
Where hearts started gleaming in wintry light - frozen.

Except for mine.
Mine was aching.
Feelings still smear over my lined face.
How dare I not be prettier?!

Grief might not be spry and I might not be able to move mountains, but at least I'm still alive.

I know this doesn't change a thing.

Tomorrow I'll plant more chrysanthemums.

Out After Dark

Leaving behind countless thwarted attempts, she finally overcame her linear thinking. It had been acting up in defiance of the chaos that ruled this tricky venture.

Onyx feathers started to show on her arms as they became more flexuous.

Pleased with her outfit for the prom, she imagined herself taking flight like scorched innocence in its natural habitat. How it would be if a cloud revealed the moon, giving her a spotlight as she landed.

While she continued to stir the cauldron, this felt like a permanent arrival. She might never change back.
