AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

It took me a while as well so here is a different explanation: It combines two memes, 1) the girl can't read 2) the guy sexting on Instagram. In this mashup he knows she can't read so he sends a voice sext instead. That's it. That is the entire joke.

I am reminded of Roger Ebert's first paragraph from his review for "The Mummy" www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-...
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a “Congo” or an “Anaconda” comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. “The Mummy” is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.

If they don't believe it's an echo chamber, I tell them about my great business idea that chat supported, selling my dirty socks, with holes, as a collectors item.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

If generative AI tools generate inappropriate language, plagiarized content, biased content, errors, mistakes, incorrect references, or misleading content, and that output is included in scientific works, it is the responsibility of the author(s). 2/

We have recently clarified our penalties for this. If a submission contains incontrovertible evidence that the authors did not check the results of LLM generation, this means we can't trust anything in the paper. 3/

The penalty is a 1-year ban from arXiv followed by the requirement that subsequent arXiv submissions must first be accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed venue. 4/

Examples of incontrovertible evidence: hallucinated references, meta-comments from the LLM ("here is a 200 word summary; would you like me to make any changes?"; "the data in this table is illustrative, fill it in with the real numbers from your experiments") end/"

I am so sick of the criticism of the "designer" bicyle storage facility in Kerry Hospital. Lets have a look at these costs, understanding them is about reframing what was actually built, and comparing it fairly against the infrastructure society routinely accepts for cars. 1/

While it was a kinda ok revenge movie I don't understand people who say it is one of the greatest bond movies. He loses his license to kill and goes vigilante like Chuck Norris in Delta Force 2. Even the non canon Sean Connery movie felt more bond.

Oh, I could scream about this for HOURS. But suffice to say: This is what happens when large studios don't want to fund original projects, anymore. They make Scooby-Doo for the 16th time, and the hot young talents goes off, runs a Kickstarter/gets backed by Glitch, and succeeds without them.

Hey if you still have an Angelfire or Tripod site, or if you like one, now is the time to back it up, like, urgently
Wikipedia snippet:

On March 6, 2026, Lycos announced that their services, specifically Angelfire and Tripod, were experiencing temporary outages in a note on their frontpage.[6] Later that day, the message was updated to say "To our users of Angelfire and Tripod. We apologize for the service interruptions. Unfortunately we will be shutting down in the next 30 days. Please move your hosting to another host as soon as possible."[7] The message was removed from the homepage shortly after, without further official statement from the company.[8]

Someone asked for an app to point your camera at a color and find matches. Cool. Here. BUT ALSO: I'm colorblind and never thought to make this for myself! Save colors ("new paint," "mom's fave"), get colorblind-friendly complements, simulate what you see vs. what others see. Legit using this daily.

What Color Is That?
No seriously, what color is that? I genuinely cannot tell. Aim your camera at a color — get its name, details, matches, plus colorblind palettes and simulation. Save colors with personal labels.

This got cut for length, but one of the reasons Veatch uses a few AI-generated clips (which are all clearly labeled) was to test the claims that generative AI programs like Sora can help filmmakers make more money through better deals with studios. Turns out, it's not that simple
While making the film, I had a conversation with the people at Sora about getting a certificate of provenance for using AI-generated footage made with one of their models in the film, and that kind of illustrated to me how this tech is all basically rotten. So much of the rhetoric from these AI companies is “this is gonna make you all rich because you're gonna be able to make stuff really fast and then sell it.” But that was hard for me to believe because if I were to sell my content to a studio like Netflix or another broadcaster, they would ask whether I owned the footage and where it came from.

So, when I made the film, I put some AI footage in there as a kind of provocation in the tradition of feminist video art where artists take the aesthetic of the oppressor and invert it. Ultimately, I had to remove a lot of that footage for broadcast because PBS has a standards and practices division, and when they asked to see my user agreements with Sora and Adobe, they told me “yeah, we can’t run Sora footage.” Adobe slop was okay, though, mainly because they indemnify the user through the user agreement.
