I wrote about my J.D. Salinger phase and also a little about my John Buchan phase and also very briefly about how all the Puffin books of my childhood were confident that what a child needed after some nice E. Nesbit was H. Rider Haggard’s She

A DHS representative did not immediately return The Independent’s request for comment.

Reading through old notes I was reminded of a podcast which described Ian Dury as "British whimsy bullshit that sounds like an up-tempo Syd Barrett." Of course, opinions are like arseholes: shut the fuck up or I'll tear you a new one.

It just occurred to me that Mr Brightside is the straight Queen Bitch. They don't just share a theme of jealous voyeurism, but some of Brandon Flowers' lyrics read like a direct homage to Bowie's ("and I'm phoning a cab/'cause my stomach feels small/there's a taste in my mouth")

I just looked up that orange lyrics book. I paid about £10 in 2008. People are now trying to sell it for £300. I guess we're eating tonight, kids.

My favourites were the times when the music teacher would split the room down the middle and have half sing Amazing Grace while the other half sang Never Ever by All Saints, with the lyrics on the OHP (if you were sat near the middle you'd try to shuffle that way).

Arguably the greatest song to be recorded 4 times by 3 iterations of a band under 3 different names and in 2 languages, and then remixed once before it reached number 2 (eventually scoring a number 1 when it was covered by my mate's little brother's band a decade and a half later)

Regarding the last repost, I was thinking earlier that the point when Mitthew Romney was videoed ironing a shirt while wearing it would have been a good one to reflect on how low the intellectual standard for candidates had become.

Morphine interview from my fanzine (1995). A formative moment for me. The day after my first night in London, alone, as a teenager. I was spat on by some tough looking lads in Hackney while trying unsuccessfully to find my way back to the flat of a friend of a friend, then having finally found it...

Britain is a land full of men so dull they're accidentally psychedelic, like staring at a white wall for too long. The question was "does anyone have any thoughts on why X band chose this title for Y album?" Imagine being this incurious; it's actually making my head spin.
Psychedelically Grey Man: "Does it actually matter?"

OP: "Curious that's all. If that's all right with you? Probably not by the sounds of it"

Psych. Grey: "A bloke writes a series of songs in collaboration with others. They decide on a title for the album. Their album. Their intellectual property. They can call it what they like. Or maybe they follow pop convention and use the title of one song, say for instance, "Little Blue" as an inspiration. Either way it doesn't really matter. (Thats from Queen BTW . On the album " Night at the opera" which I bought during daylight and nowhere near an opera house). It's just a nonsense question"

"I only eat Pot Noodles and other people talking about their enjoyment of fancy restaurant food makes me feel inferior, so I need to find an effortless way to feel superior about dismissing their tastes as snobbery" makes sense. It's a mentality you might call Klostermania.

Shout out to Thai football club PT Prachuap, whose recent signing of Andros Townsend might save him from losing his eyesight to the eclipse.
From Wikipedia: "In May 2026, Townsend posted a social media video questioning why people needed to wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from sunlight but not from artificial light. He followed this up with another video claiming that when eyes are exposed to sunlight, 'your brain then sends the relevant UV protection back into your body to protect against the sun,' and urging viewers to 'ditch the sunglasses and let your eyes do their job.'"
