I would be excited about this book even if the cover sucked. But the cover is really really good.

Tried to tell someone I had packed a particular medication and autocorrect made it so I typed Carlton is in the car and this means that the Leafs are going all the way this year

Some years ago a friend who is a philosopher told me about a talk she went to about not anthropomorphizing humans and at first it sounded like the craziest thing I had ever heard but honestly one of the most useful things for my mental health is not to anthropomorphize myself too much

I was going to make a joke about how my Cuisinart was actually a form of AI because of how it cuts things on its own but then I realized that as a joke it could actually be taken as pro ai, in that no oceans are drained for my Cuisinart’s ability to cut things very small

tarzan of the apes (extremely naked and fully erect Philip José Farmer version) will sex-wrestle the rogue AI into submission while shouting "kreegah bundolo," which, as john connor has ensured through a time travel subplot, is the secret shutdown phrase backdoored into the mainframe

When I was younger I had a pair of pants taken from an ex-boyfriend and at the time I thought I liked them because of lingering affection for him but I came across a basically identical pair of pants in the wild and it turns out they just look really good on me

really great @maitreyiaa.bsky.social interview with @justinellis.bsky.social about his brilliant new book THE CRUELTY OF NICE FOLKS (which is out now, buy buy buy!) defector.com/justin-ellis...
This is also one of the pernicious ways that white supremacy works, right? The idea that just to survive is not exceptional, when in reality, because of the ways that structural racism impacts our lives—that it literally defines the neighborhoods that we live in, the opportunities our families can have—that's just not the case. Every family that is marginalized is a success, is a celebration. That was another part to me that rang out. Just because you didn't have someone that was the first of something, someone that ran for office, someone that founded a business—and there are a lot of those people in this book—you didn't have relationships with the powerful, you didn't suffer at the hands of the police, that doesn't make your story or your family any less important.

This is a sentiment you hear a lot from now-elderly people who grew up without a lot of material comforts. Their perceptual and material worlds were pretty well aligned! Now we basically all live in the perceptual world of the wealthy. It’s hard to imagine anyone not knowing what they don’t have.

This is an insane way to describe Bainbridge Island.
It takes one cross-country plane, a train, a ferry, then another hour or so by car to reach the writer Lindy West. I had read plenty about how remote her home is, but only by sitting shotgun with West in her girlfriend’s maroon Hyundai Elantra did I understand just how far she was from even a gas station. When I had asked, weeks before my arrival, if I could take an Uber to her house near Bainbridge Island, Washington, from Seattle’s Amtrak station, she laughed at me.*

I’ve been thinking a lot about this cabin in the woods since I read her new memoir, Adult Braces: Driving Myself Sane, which came out this week. It is the homestead for West’s polyamorous relationship, the news of which went modestly viral in 2022. Today just West is at home—well, she and her dog, Barold “Barry” Saxophone.
