Scotland’s unpaid carers save the country £15.9 billion every year – yet many live in poverty and poor health. The Scottish Budget must deliver real support for unpaid carers and local carer organisations. See our full statement here: www.carersuk.org/news/nationa... #CarersCantWait

The most stressed out I've ever been about Christmas was when I was 16 and I got my first ever job, working at M&S in Dundrum. As soon as I started I kept hearing these myths about the Christmas Eve Waste Sale, where all the food that wasn't sold on the 24th was marked down 90%.

It is depressing, but all too predictable, how swiftly we’ve gone from the Social Science Genetic Association Consortium offering reassurances about the uses of behavioural polygenic scores to one of their lead authors marketing embryo selection for IQ
Text from an FAQ in Okbay et al 20222:
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41588-022-01016-z
a similar same statement is made in an FAQ in 2025: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.05.14.653986v1.supplementary-material
Text reads:
"The results of SSGAC studies have sometimes been used by online platforms, including some companies, to predict individual outcomes. We recognize that returning individual genomic “results” can be a fun way to engage people in research and other projects and to feed or stoke their interest in genomics. But it is important that participants/users understand that these individual results are not meaningful predictions and should be regarded essentially as entertainment. Failure to make this point clear risks sowing confusion and undermining trust in genetics research"

Today I took a message to Rachel Reeves at the Treasury: it's time to rebalance the economy. A #WealthTax on multi-millionaires and billionaires would raise £24billion - nearly 5 times as much as the government is trying to save by taking support away from disabled people.
Green MPs Sian Berry, Adrian Ramsay, Carla Denyer and Ellie Chowns stand behind a giant set of scales. On one side is a heavy bag labelled 'wealth tax' and on the other side is a light bag labelled 'welfare cuts.' Behind the MPs is a crowd of Green Party supporters holding placards saying 'Real Hope, Real Change' and 'Rebalance the Economy'.

Here we present a new, Bayesian approach, using hierarchical modelling, which better accounts for abundances in variation and which results in more accurate measurements of the proportion of affected patient cells.
100
Conor @lwlss.net · 20/02/2025
Naive comparisons between cells from healthy subjects and patients leads to very large overestimates of the proportions of affected cells, which leads to poor measurements of disease severity.
Scatterplots for visualising protein abundance per cell in order to classify cell OXPHOS status. x-axis values represent the abundance of general mitochondrial proteins, whereas y-axis values represent the abundances of specific proteins which we believe are affected by mitochondrial diseases. Points labelled yellow represent cells that have been manually annoted by experts as defective. Red points represent cells that have been classified as defective by a naive, historical approach. Blue points represent cells that have been classified as normal by the same approach.
000
Conor @lwlss.net · 20/02/2025
However, it turns out that identifying affected cells from these data is difficult, because of the wide variation in protein abundances in all cells (affected and unaffected). Historically we have compared protein abundances in patient cells with those from known healthy control subjects.
