"[Variants of R-hat and the effective sample size] flag failures of convergence, but they are not designed to characterise the structure of that failure." Excellent work that clearly identifies practical situations where this matters, proposes a diagnostic, explains how to use it and how *not* to.

This was my first time leading one of our Replication Games solo and I couldn't have asked for a better place to get my start. :) Great organization, highly motivated participants with a diverse mix of research backgrounds, and a beautiful city to top it all off.

Modeling non-response is an example I like to use when arguing that "descriptive" statistics also require causal inference. To describe the population, you have to model what causes the sample. Similar to occupancy modeling in ecology in many ways.

Interaction effects are very common in psychological research, but they are typically hard to replicate. A suspected reason for this is measurement error. Because of the poor replicability, a common recommendation is to not model interactions. 🧵

Important work. “The emerging literature blurs the line between integrity filtering, based on necessary but insufficient signals of validity like reproducibility of stated results or lack of fake citations, and epistemic filtering, which uses machine-detectable signals to judge scientific quality.”

How do you make LLMs actually good at explaining new math? It's like reading a badly written reference for people who already know the subject. When I ask a question, it never matches my level. If I try to rephrase to test my understanding, it just sycophantically agrees.

Considering (1), once one has settled on a certain way to say something, it can be very hard to decide to throw everything over. Maybe you’re stuck with a structure you just can’t get to work. Maybe you’ve fallen in love with a certain phrase but then it doesn’t really fit with the rest. Or you’re really settled on making a particular argument, but it’s actually not necessary and even distracts from the main message. Nobody likes killing their darlings and major overhauls aren’t exactly fun. But often, they’re absolutely worth it. This is the point where feedback from other people becomes really important — they will let you know if what you are trying to do just doesn’t work. They don’t care about your darlings one bit.

Statistics is hard actually, example # 193851. So strive for better but go easy on yourself. Results from a modestly sized survey in a convenience sample of mostly industry statisticians working in oncology trials: www.springermedizin.de/current-prac...
Although this has been thoroughly discussed in the FDA guidelines [1] and elsewhere in literature for non-collapsible measures (for example, [4]), the survey result suggests that many respondents were still not aware that covariate adjusted or stratified analyses may estimate different quantities in a non-linear model. The results are summarized in Table 1. Among the 122 respondents, 61.5% respondents think that a stratified analysis and unstratified analysis target the same estimand in non-linear models; if one is chosen as the primary analysis, the other could be a "sensitivity analysis”, (which, by definition, targets the same estimand as the primary analysis). Similarly, 56.6% of respondents indicated that covariate-adjusted analysis and covariate-unadjusted analysis target the same estimand in non-linear models, and 57.4% respondents believe removing or pooling strata on an ad-hoc basis for interim analysis does not change the pre-specified estimand. The result is quite consistent across the three questions, which demonstrates the gap in the understanding of different statistical analysis models targeting different estimands for non-collapsible measures, and the critical need of further clarification and training on this topic. Retrospectively, we acknowledge that the survey question in relation to unstratified analyses may have been open to interpretation, since this can refer to an unadjusted analysis (which would always target a marginal estimand, or an adjusted analysis (which may target a conditional or marginal estimand in non-linear models depending on how it is approached in estimation). For clarity, our recommendations and conclusions insinuate that the unstratified analyses referred to unadjusted models. However, we highlight this as a limitation of the responses to the question in reference to unstratified analyses.
