I went to go see The Format last night in concert. I’ve been a big fan for 20+ years (and they’ve been on hiatus for about that long!), and I realized a huge part of what set them apart from a lot of their contemporaries is they really know how to structure a song.

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

Watched Picnic at Hanging Rock for the first time after years of meaning to. So supremely up my alley. I love works that deal with how folks handle unresolved mystery and the grief it causes, and this has quickly placed itself right up there with John Darnielle’s Universal Harvester in that space.

There’s really nothing to say in comment on Bret’s latest that Toni Morrison didn’t say perfectly 51 years ago.
It's important, therefore, to know who the real enemy is, and to know the function, the very serious function of racism, which is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and so you spend 20 years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn't shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says that you have no art so you dredge that up. Somebody says that you have no kingdoms and so you dredge that up. None of that is necessary. There will always be one more thing.

I’m just really excited about making physical copies of some of my games. I’m so glad the flip switched in my brain from “gotta convince a publisher to make these” to “I have some money, I can just print a handful of them myself”. Hugely liberating.

Oh this is spot fucking on, especially this part:
When Obama said he supported civil unions in the run-up to the 2008 and 2012 elections, he was offering gay people a slower pace of progress. When Democrats today triangulate on transgender rights, they are offering us a slower pace of decline.

My first experience with Age of Steam left me pretty cold, but every time I play it, I like it more. It’s a more flexible system than I thought on first blush and can do some really weird stuff with the design tools it provides. Guess I gotta go to Age of Steam Con in November to see what’s what.

They Sit Together on the Porch
BY WENDELL BERRY
They sit together on the porch, the dark Almost fallen, the house behind them dark.
Their supper done with, they have washed and dried The dishes-only two plates now, two glasses,
Two knives, two forks, two spoons-small work for two.
She sits with her hands folded in her lap, At rest. He smokes his pipe. They do not speak, And when they speak at last it is to say
What each one knows the other knows. They have One mind between them, now, that finally For all its knowing will not exactly know Which one goes first through the dark doorway, bidding Goodnight, and which sits on a while alone.

Wendell Berry reignited my love for rural communities and the natural world in my early 20’s. I don’t think I’d be the same person I am without his writing. He expressed the power and beauty to be found in caring for your neighbors and the land you live on. God bless him and his family.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

Nicaea is a blast. As someone who can’t help but still identify as religious but is allergic to hierarchy and structures of power, the thesis and humor in it resonates with me. Christianity has and is always going to be influenced by the political reality it exists in, and it sure was at Nicaea.

This highlights a striking difference between film, video game, tv, and book criticism versus board games: however thin it's gotten, there is institutional support for professional critics in basically any other form, while for board games this is incredibly rare (1/4)

Raymond Chandler on science fiction, 1953
Letter to H. N. Swanson,
14 March 1953-

Did you ever read what they call Science Fiction? It's a scream. It's written like this: 'I checked out with K19 on Adabaran III, and stepped out through the crummaliote hatch on my 22 Model Sirus Hardtop. I cocked the timejector in secondary and waded through the bright blue manda grass. My breath froze into pink pretzels. I flicked on the heat bars and the Bryllis ran swiftly on five legs using their other two to send out crylon vibrations. The pressure was almost unbearable, but I caught the range on my wrist computer through the transparent cysicites. I pressed the trigger. The thin violet glow was icecold against the rust-colored mountains. The Bryllis shrank to half an inch long and I worked fast stepping on them with the poltex. But it wasn't enough. The sudden brightness swung me around and the Fourth Moon had already risen. I had exactly four seconds to hot up the disintegrator and Google had told me it wasn't enough. He was right.'

They pay brisk money for this crap?
