In today's diary, I get into one of my favorite subjects: agency in historical games. Did the Opium Wars have to happen? Were the player's historical counterparts in a position to prevent them? It's a big subject, and a place where the 2e differs sharply from 1e. boardgamegeek.com/thread/37746...

Had a great time at @stonemaiergames.com Design Day prototype convention this weekend. Had some great playtests of my action programming area control game Franchise Wars that I designed with Brendan Hansen. I’m always so buzzed by the creative energy at this event.

Played Jisogi last night and had a great time but man it was totally sold by its theming. I had way more fun describing the “gore fantasy” or “detective sci fi” anime I was creating with the story prompts than doing the euro optimization puzzle thing.

Watching @itsquinns.bsky.social chat with Brennan Lee Mulligan on Adventure Academy was such a treat. Like the @ecfriedman.com episode, it's great to hear people talk so eloquently about games on a large platform. I've been a fan of Quinns for so long and it was surreal to see him on my TV.

My pal @tricktaking.bsky.social made the most bonkers deckbuilding trick-taking game. It is SO MUCH my kinda thing and I can't wait for this one to get out there. This is the sort of mad scientist style of trick-taker that just flips the genre on its head. www.kickstarter.com/projects/ins...

I played the video game Dispatch over the 3 day weekend and was impressed. It was written, directed, and performed better than most superhero movies or TV shows that I've seen. The actual "gameplay" was serviceable. I don't normally care about narrative games but this was too engaging to put down.
