Important work. The UK faces real threats, but there’s also a real risk that in rushing to meet arbitrary targets we fail to apply the same level of scrutiny to defence that we do to the rest of government spending. With other capital budgets already being cut to fund the DIP, that can’t continue.

Bit late to this but great work as always from Persuasion. Yet more evidence that bold action on cost of living reaps political rewards as well as making life better for millions. @costoflivingaction.bsky.social has a clear blueprint for where to start, including many of the policies tested here.

This is a really good piece @willdunn.bsky.social and definitely the best I've read today on bond market reactions. But I think you're a little unfair on the Tribune position, which (as I read) is clear that budget balance would need to be achieved before any changes to the fiscal rules.

The cost of living crisis and our low growth are two symptoms of the same problem: an economic structure that hasn’t been working for a long time. We need to take on the root causes of those costs.

Yes, the bond markets present genuine constraints, but we need to get beyond the breathless coverage of minute-by-minute moves and have a serious conversation about how to restore the UK to genuine fiscal sustainability. The ideas set out here are a big step in that direction. /7

Finally, @louisehaighmp.bsky.social is right to call for a reset to our fiscal framework - including the fundamental architecture that keeps us focused on the wrong metrics, as well as the rules. /6

@labourgrowth.bsky.social also link the cost of essentials to over-concentrated economic power. Their tax reform and fiscal devolution proposals are welcome. Subjecting essential utilities to a tougher public interest test is a first step towards fixing our broken model of regulated services. /5

So what should we do about it? @yuanfenyang.bsky.social is spot on about the structural issues underpinning the cost of living, and her suggestions - particularly a rising block tariff on energy - come closer to meeting the challenge than anything we’ve seen from this government. /4

Louis Willis @louiswillis.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
For both, the UK’s growth model has been too dependent on asset-inflation and rent-extraction, and not enough on investment in genuinely productive sectors. This is a critical driver of both our sluggish economy and the rising cost of essentials. /3

While much of the coverage is framing this as a debate between rival camps, I am struck by the extent to which the Tribune and Growth Groups share the same diagnosis and many of the same solutions - and how much of a departure this is from what we’ve seen from this government to-date. /2

To deliver the stability you have rightly emphasised, you must find additional tax revenue at the coming Budget. There are progressive, pro-growth options available if the government is willing to undertake more fundamental reforms to the tax system. Above all, the tax and pension system needs to be rebalanced so that better-off older people, especially those with substantial property and pension wealth, make a much larger contribution to addressing the fiscal pressures that result from increasing spend on the NHS, social care and pensions. These and other pressures on public spending must also be managed in a more sustainable way.
