With his vision of public control of essentials, Burnham showed that public investment is the key to raising living standards, reducing regional inequality and restoring hope. That is the kind of ambition Britain needs.

Putting the political drama to one side for a moment, it's great to see so many ideas emerging today for how this government can do better in tackling the fundamental challenges facing our economy - low productivity growth, a lack of resilience and a rising cost of living. /1

The OBR has been making us poorer for over a decade. They've underestimated the impact of public spending (cuts) on growth. That has helped lead to a doom loop: Cuts -> Lower growth -> lower revenues -> missed borrowing target -> more cuts etc. www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk-...

Ramping up public investment is the best route out of the UK’s productivity crisis. Our new report finds increasing public investment by an additional 2% of GDP per year would kickstart growth, raise average earnings, and strengthen the public finances. inews.co.uk/news/politic...

This Budget move could put £1,800 in every worker's pocket, according to economists
A new report suggests that putting more money into public investment would boost growth and average earnings over the next decade

At a Treasury Select Committee evidence session on the Spring Statement, the OBR's Richard Hughes explained how difficult it is to forecast fiscal headroom accurately, and that public policy should "not just respond to where the economy might be headed in a 5 year period".

Invest in Britain Director @louiswillis.bsky.social responds to the Chancellor's Spring Statement earlier today ⬇️
“It’s clear that short-term book-keeping continues to be the driving force behind the Chancellor’s decisions today. She is yet to break with the economic logic that has left us with crumbling public services, falling living standards and weak growth.

“Delivering a decade of national renewal requires a step change in investment in public services, climate action and a just transition. That is the only route to real security.

“This means tax reform must be back on the table at the next Budget. Ensuring those with the broadest shoulders pay their fair share should be a priority.”
