Today inflation rose again, driven by fuel prices and rents continuing to squeeze household budgets. The budget is a chance for Andy Burnham to put words into action and truly tackle the cost of living. COLA reaction thorough @osheaconor.bsky.social:
“The threat of higher bills and higher prices as winter approaches is terrifying households already pushed to the limit by a never ending cost of living crisis.

“Andy Burnham continues to pledge that he will run a ‘cost of living government’, and the Budget that he and the Chancellor are currently preparing must reflect that. It’s time to put billpayers’ interests above those of the profiteers that exploit them, with a comprehensive package of public ownership, social housebuilding and fairer taxes.”

I’ll be appearing on Talk TV at about 10 o’clock this evening to discuss today’s council housebuilding announcement for @costoflivingaction.bsky.social.
001
Cost of Living Action @costoflivingaction.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Social and council housebuilding is an important pillar in the fight against the cost of living crisis. Today's announcement is a welcome start, but it is important that this is the start of the process. COLA's response:
“Building 70,000 new council and social homes will change lives across the country and is an important pillar in the fight against the ongoing cost of living crisis. Housing is the biggest outgoing for millions across the country and the Prime Minister is absolutely right to be prioritising this as a way of bringing that down.

“It is important that this is the start and not the end of the process. While an excellent start, this is well short of the government’s own target overall and there are still significant hurdles to clear and a long timeframe to make these homes a reality. To help protect families from rising costs now, the government must implement private sector rent controls, giving households clarity and security over their largest outgoings.”

It's great to see a party leader back the call led by COLA partners @positivemoneyuk.bsky.social for a windfall tax on banks. For so long, bank profits have soared while our bills have risen and the cost of living crisis has bitten. The government must look carefully at this proportionate option.
000
Cost of Living Action @costoflivingaction.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Inflation is up. Again. We need to see more from the government to protect us. COLA reaction:
“As inflation increases again, driven by the highest rise in gas prices in four years, the threat of higher bills and higher prices as a result of the Iran war looms large over household budgets.

“The new government has rightly identified the cost of living crisis as the defining political issue of our times. To properly protect millions across the country from the effects of price shocks and the profiteering baked into our systems that have driven up bills, it is vital that the Prime Minister stays true to his word and addresses the structural causes of this ongoing crisis before the year is out.”

Andy Burnham is the Prime Minister and he spent his first minutes in the job talking about his plan for the cost of living outside Number 10 Downing Street. Our reaction:
Cost of Living Action Reaction to Andy Burnham's Appointment as Prime Minister:

“As he takes office as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham knows that the ongoing cost of living crisis is the greatest challenge he faces. Millions across the country cannot afford the essentials and feel that the government is to blame.

“He has rightly promised to provide ‘breathing space’ on the cost of living. To meet the scale of the challenge we face, this must include both immediate measures, such as support on energy bills and rent controls, as well as the longer term solutions like public control of energy, a sustained social housebuilding programme and a fairer taxation system. Now is the time to turn positive words into action.”
