Today inflation rose again, driven by fuel prices and rents continuing to squeeze household budgets. The budget is a chance for Andy Burnham to put words into action and truly tackle the cost of living. COLA reaction thorough @osheaconor.bsky.social:
“The threat of higher bills and higher prices as winter approaches is terrifying households already pushed to the limit by a never ending cost of living crisis.

“Andy Burnham continues to pledge that he will run a ‘cost of living government’, and the Budget that he and the Chancellor are currently preparing must reflect that. It’s time to put billpayers’ interests above those of the profiteers that exploit them, with a comprehensive package of public ownership, social housebuilding and fairer taxes.”

Quote from Danny Sriskandarajah, Chief executive: At the New Economics Foundation, we’ve been waiting 40 years for a PM who promises to "build a new economy". What we need to see now are the measures that will deliver the promises he just made on Downing Street. The new government’s top priority needs to be early action to address cost of living pressures through policies like a national energy guarantee, rent controls and free bus fares for under-25s.

Andy Burnham is the Prime Minister and he spent his first minutes in the job talking about his plan for the cost of living outside Number 10 Downing Street. Our reaction:
Cost of Living Action Reaction to Andy Burnham's Appointment as Prime Minister:

“As he takes office as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham knows that the ongoing cost of living crisis is the greatest challenge he faces. Millions across the country cannot afford the essentials and feel that the government is to blame.

“He has rightly promised to provide ‘breathing space’ on the cost of living. To meet the scale of the challenge we face, this must include both immediate measures, such as support on energy bills and rent controls, as well as the longer term solutions like public control of energy, a sustained social housebuilding programme and a fairer taxation system. Now is the time to turn positive words into action.”

This morning, the energy price cap has increased, meaning households will have around £200 added to their bills. This will strike fear into families across the country who cannot afford to see bills rise again. Our response:
Cost of Living Action Reaction to the Energy Price Cap Increase:

“The rise in the energy price cap will strike fear into families across the country who cannot afford to see bills rise again. The government is right to prioritise targeted support for lower income households with their energy bills, but many are in need of this support now and cannot wait until the autumn.

“As long as we remain so exposed to global instability and vulnerable to profiteering in our energy system, consumers will continue to worry about the impact on their bills. We need to see a response that tackles the causes as well as the symptoms of this crisis:
that’s why we’re urging the government to take bolder structural action - such as nationalising elements of the distribution grid and implementing a fairer essential energy guarantee.”
