Thanks. Also FYI this was Berg's post I had meant to share. $270mm difference is still equivalent to ~400 new R01's, so not trivial. But in general surprised me that the difference was relatively small (only 6.5% less funding for new and competitive renewals than in 2024). bsky.app/profile/jere...

RFK Jr was confirmed. There is a lesson here for the future. The only chance that science had to stop RFK was a public relations strategy—to mobilize enough of the public that people not paying attention to politics would learn that he is a disaster. We failed at that. Let’s fix it and do better. 🧪

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

This is what amounts to an ILLEGAL & indiscriminate funding cut for research centers everywhere. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, and derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction. We all need to speak out to save lives.

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

Indirect rates are not determined by NIH. Instead, they are the product of elaborate negotiations between each institution and the “cognizant federal agency” according to an Office of Management and Budget document, Circular A-21. 1/n

On reflection, some analysis of the Trump NIH funding cuts tonight. 1. The indirect rates are unequal. But they’re not very unequal. Harvard 69%, Wayne State 55%, Texas A&M 54%, Vanderbilt 58%. Some of this variation is justified based on cost-of-living in different places. 🧪 1/
