Nicole is a leading expert on the issue of campus sexual violence. I am floored that USA Today would do this to her. I find this kind of journalistic behavior unethical and morally reprehensible, twisting an interview with a renowned advocate for survivors into a hit piece against a survivor.

The problem with being a specialist nerd - as all specialist nerds will know - is that sometimes you come up with a phrase you find vastly entertaining, and it will entertain 5 other people, max. globally. Today's was "as we know, echinoderms can't osmoregulate their way out of a salty paper bag."

In today’s episode of This Fucking Guy™️ on iNaturalist, Douchebag McDunningKruger (of the Chicago branch of McDunningKrugers) ruined a perfectly decent and wholesome exchange on a starfish ID. His main evidence was: 1) misunderstanding the anatomy 2) misunderstanding the distribution Aiieee.

Today I was stiff and sore and tired and bailed on some stuff I really wanted to do. So I spent the day combing iNaturalist for possible cases of sea star wasting disease in Australia. Very uplifting. And then, because in spite of being very sore, I don’t cope well if I don’t move…

I have finally cobbled together the vigour and enthusiasm to do justice to my adventures in Vancouver-- At the VERY FIRST WORKSHOP for the MARINE STAR SPECIALIST GROUP, with the goal of assessing the status of 100 species of sea-star. "What the heck are you talking about?!" you may ask. (fair.)

Also, tbh, I kind of don’t trust my immune system. It’s dropped the ball a few times. *glares in glandular fever* [that’s “mono” to the yanks] …so I enrol it in the occasional Cert IV to make sure it’s not coasting.

“I trust my immune system. I don’t need a vaccine.” Ok, I trust mine to protect me too. Which is why I trained it extensively on what the virus looks like so it can handle it. Boxers don’t enter the ring without a plan. It’s the punch you don’t see coming that knocks you out.

This is why, when given the “Evolution” chapter of a year 11 biology textbook, I included an info box on the antechinus, a genus of small Australian marsupials with 14 species. In 13 of those, mating is so aggressive with the fighting and fucking that the male dies. Sexual selection is wild.

I have been burning the candle at both ends and in the middle for months now, and a lot of it was because my whole schedule of projects got fucked up by managing building surveyor dispute. So I have been absolutely caning it and the plan was to chill a bit after the Vancouver workshop.

Ah, a note, if you're put off by that "1/68" down there (🫣), that's fair - but you can get the general gist if you stop at 15/68. I go into specifics and details because that's how I support my arguments, and also some of the details matter to me; they're kind of optional though.

Existential crisis. There’s a complete and utter wanker on iNaturalist who — in between very occasional useful observations — shits all over actual published science and vomits ignorance all over the place and he has genuinely made my job so much harder. He has self-published another book.

So I have slept for 2-3 of the last 32 hours, but am back at home base! Unfortunately I am bad at doing things like just… taking a rest… when I get back from travelling. I need to put my environment to rights. Like, I *have* to. I can’t rest otherwise. It’s a whole thing.

This is true. When I wander into the internet wilds to debunk shit — doesn’t happen often these days — it’s not with the intent to convert someone who’s fully bought into whatever-it-is. It’s for the studio audience. The moveable middle. And if you take the time, they usually appreciate it.

As a mild-moderate bendy person, a chunk of my brain's processor cycles go to cosplaying a person who understands muscle feedback so I don't trip over literally nothing. Turns out that when you don't sleep for 30 hours, that overhead ain't there. Unless UBC is swaying in a strong wind? No? Goodo.

I did not forget that I am literally unable to sleep while sitting upright. Nor did I forget what it feels like to have been awake for 24 hours (which will approach 28 on touchdown and given baggage claim, customs, transport, clear 30 before I crash). And yet. Decisions were made.
