My Halloween advent calendar. 5th OCT 7" of the Hammer House Of Horror theme by Roger Webb. Saturday nights in 1980 were a treat for a young horror fan. A tune that still makes me feel excited, a bit anxious, but slightly melancholic. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEBl...

Today: started a re-watch of SAPPHIRE & STEEL. And episode 1 is amazing. Only 25 mins & everything is there - the setting, the characters, the dread, “Time is a corridor...” And some of the camerawork is amazing too - those first shots tracking through the house! Absolutely masterful television.
A still from Assignment One of Sapphire & Steel.
Sapphire is holding Helen, while Rob looks at Steel who is staring warily up at something malevolent.

I did, however, enjoy the Play For Today on Channel 5 - Village Idiot. Not at all what I was expecting, but it was really funny. (Only niggle: there was no way that railway got built that quickly. Would have been *decades* later. #HS2)

Watching one of the new ITV dramas & blimey, a lot of the dialogue is absolutely terrible. People are burbling nonsense that no real person would ever say. The actual stories aren’t bad (some plot holes, but that’s fairly normal), but some of the exchanges are laughable.

Next in my re-read of all Philip K Dick - Dr Bloodmoney Or How We Got Along After The Bomb. In a world wrecked by war, society struggles on. Another cracking but complex #PKD novel about survival, hope & evil. Also has a fab Afterword with Phil himself reflecting on the story 15 years later.
Book: Dr Bloodmoney by Philip K Dick.
Cover is a slightly comical illustration of Hoppy Harrington in his buggy , looking up at a spaceship, with a nuclear explosion behind him.Book: Dr Bloodmoney by Philip K Dick.
Cover shows Dangerfield in his orbiting spaceship, with the Earth below him.Book: Dr Bloodmoney by Philip K Dick.
Cover shows Phil himself holding the Earth with is being torn apart by a nuclear explosion and had a spaceship orbiting too.Book: Dr Bloodmoney by Philip K Dick.
Cover shows another interpretation of Hoppy Harrington in his buggy, looking at a ruined-by-war suspension bridge.

Now it’s October, Pumpkin Pete has been released from his dark cobweb-strewn cell in the basement here at Beresford Manor. He hopes everyone has a spooky, creepy month...
Pumpkin Pete sitting in front of a pile of Halloween short story anthologies.

Pumpkin Pete might look like a small cute knitted pumpkin with a sewn-on crazy smile and mismatched eyes, but he is really a demon who can only safely be let out during the Halloween season because otherwise his spooky dark energy might overwhelm the whole neighbourhood.

I'm 17 episodes into a Twilight Zone (1959) watch and I'm quite convinced it's the greatest show ever. Each one is a small jewel of a complete movie that fucks off in 25 minutes and then Rod Serling smokes at you and tells you to come back next week.
