A Halloween thriller rather than an out-and-out horror, but no less horrific. An Isle of Man police procedural set on several of the darkest nights of the year, featuring some eye-poppingly elaborate murders and strong, identifiable characters. My full review: paulfinch-writer.blogspot.com

When gangsters abduct a security boss’s family, to force him to assist with a heist, a drunken ex-cop sets out to foil them. Gritty slice of 1970s Noir, competently written and filled with painful scenes of alcoholism, though its moral ambiguity and tough, sleazy tone strike a grimly authentic note.

Is redemption through steel possible? Perhaps, depending on how evil the antagonists are, and maybe how merciful the protagonist. But what if he's not prepared to be merciful at all?

A hitman is charged with protecting the unwitting heiress to a criminal empire, and a journey to redemption begins. Another dark parable from the master of the thoughtful crime thriller. Asks many ethical questions but entertains to the max. My review: paulfinch-writer.blogspot.com/2017/07/were...

A doctor joins a drilling op on the Atlantic floor, but the prize below is a thing of terrifying power. Withstand the torrent of scientific detail, and there’s much to enjoy in this deep ocean sci-fi thriller. The environment is vividly captured, the atmosphere taut, the concept high they come.

Disparate characters investigate an urban legend and uncover a series of murders. Exceptionally well-written mystery from Tom Wood (writing as Ripley). A deep dive into the world of urban myths and troubled minds, with a constant sense of impending doom. Massively intriguing and packed with twists.

When a London hotel is captured by terrorists, it falls to a tired ex-squaddie to take them down. Another episode in Wilson’s Adversary Cycle, Repairman Jack this time infiltrating the Dormentalist Temple, a NY-based cult hellbent on creating a worldwide catastrophe. Slickly written and hugely clever, and featuring the usual array of complex, high-stakes predicaments. Energised and enthralling.

A Texas woman abducts an elderly man, determined to prove him the serial killer responsible for her sister’s disappearance, and takes him on a hellish road trip ... Raw, creepy travelogue of a crime thriller. Lacking in action, but captivatingly written in the Southern Noir tradition.

Sobering collection of tales from ‘50s America, courtesy of a fine author. The schoolkid who brings isolation on himself. The tough drill sergeant who can’t compete in an age of postwar bureaucracy. The writer conned into turning a cab-driver’s life into literature. Sad, funny and thought-provoking.

I bought that Halloween Party edition purely for Tom Adams' cover. The Hooded Gunman by John Curran is a huge illustrated tome showing the changing faces of crime fiction published by Collins over the decades. Some truly fantastic covers in there, particularly if you like your book covers retro.
