50 years ago, on Sept 20, 1976, the first episode of I, Claudius "A Touch of Murder" aired on BBC TV. A first-rate 12 episode television adaptation of the Robert Graves historical novels I, Claudius and Claudius the God. The political intrigue & imperial drama makes Game of Thrones look tame.

Nice! UCP stronghold of Calgary-Shaw elected the NDP candidate in yesterday's by-election. The seat was formerly held by Rebecca Schulz, a one-time challenger for UCP leadership and then Danielle Smith's Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, who was married to an O&G lobbyist. Fuck the UCP!

A happy 81st birthday to the excellent Clive Merrison born #OTD 15 Sept 1945. Merrison famously gave voice to Sherlock Holmes (alongside Michael Williams as Watson) in the fine BBC Radio dramatizations of all 60 Sherlock Holmes stories, and in 15 original stories (with Andrew Sachs as Watson).

It was #OTD 31 years ago that Jeremy Brett (3 Nov 1933 – 12 Sept 1995) died. His portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the Granada series defined the character for a whole generation of television viewers. Here’s my old pen & ink tribute sketch from 1995.

I'm pleased to announce that today sees the reissue of my three supernatural story collections in newly revised and expanded editions, in hardback, paperback, and on Kindle. Jamesian tales of antiquarian dread, and Holmesian adventures in the shadowy realms of the uncanny await.
Cover images for three books by Daniel McGachey under the heading Scholars, Scribes, Spectres & Sleuths. The books are They That Dwell in Dark Places, whose cover shows a ghostly hand reaching out through red curtains, By No Mortal Hand, which shows a curled hand nestling like a spider in a web, and Sherlock Holmes: The Impossible Cases, whose cover shows a silhouette of Holmes looking through a magnifying glass at a bloodstained Baker Street on a Victorian map. All three books are now available in paperback, hardback, and on Kindle.

It is Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'question', a very apt word for Sherlock Holmes. In this extract from Chaz Brenchley's His Martian Apprentice (published tomorrow), Holmes discovers how life is on the streets of Marsport for orphan boys. wizardstowerpress.co...
He considered me thoughtfully, then put another question. “How do you come to be under Mr Garrard’s… care?”
“He bought me, sir. From the magistrate.”
“Oh, come now. We don’t buy and sell people in the British Empire. Not even wicked boys,” with the glimmer of laughter in his deep-set eyes.
“Not at your end of it, sir, no.” That was a risk—it might have been taken as impertinence, which is the worst kind of discourtesy—but I’d been telling him true so far, so I thought I might as well carry on. He didn’t seem the kind to complain to Mr Garrard. “Down my end? Happens all the time. Mr Garrard has… an arrangement with the magistrate. He buys me out of trouble, and now I’m bound to him.”
