Given how fragile Camadian federalism already is, this isn't really politically tenable. Getting all 10 provincial legislatures to unanimously sign on for that option isn't in the cards.

I'm no expert on American demography. But I have seen American culture like the tv series "Cops". Have you seen it? It's a weekly vignette of happenstance encounters with the American working class.

My favourite part of Ace Combat 8's story so far is when the dead ace narrates Theve as a frigid white waste, a forgotten no man's land beyond remembering and history, and then you fly over Theve and it's literally a map of normal Toronto.

There is an entire literature around this. The concept of "stealth learning" through games. Defamiliarize the context of a security problem in a game and you can prompt reflections that would be difficult to elicit with a more fastidiously realistic set up.

Norman Rockwell's painting Freedom of Speech

Freedom of Speech depicts a scene of a 1942 Arlington town meeting in which Jim Edgerton, the lone dissenter to the town selectmen's announced plans to build a new school, as the old one had burned down, was accorded the floor as a matter of protocol. Edgerton supported the rebuilding process but was concerned about the tax burden of the proposal, as his family farm had been ravaged by disease. A memory of this scene struck Rockwell as an excellent fit for illustrating "freedom of speech", and inspired him to use his Vermont neighbors as models for the entire Four Freedoms series.

The blue-collar speaker wears a plaid shirt and suede jacket, with dirty hands and a darker complexion than others in attendance. The other attendees are wearing white shirts, ties and jackets. One of the men in the painting is holding a document that reveals a subject of the meeting as "a discussion of the town's annual report". Edgerton's youth and workmanlike hands are fashioned with a worn and stained jacket, while the other attendees appear to be older and more neatly and formally dressed. According to Bruce Cole of The Wall Street Journal, Edgerton is shown "standing tall, his mouth open, his shining eyes transfixed, he speaks his mind, untrammeled and unafraid", and his face resembles Abraham Lincoln. According to Robert Scholes, the work shows audience members in rapt attention with admiration of the speaker, who resembles a Gary Cooper or Jimmy Stewart character in a Frank Capra film. According to John Updike, the work is painted without any painterly brushwork.

The best criticism of the Build Canada Strong legislation is that it leans more on "give politicians discretion to skip our bad processes" than it does fixing the underlying bad processes, but no one wants to deal with the latter quagmire.

The BCCons business is extremely funny, so I support it. But it's also just the liveliest version of a tension we're seeing across the Canadian right. The basic shape of the problem is you can't pitch a tent big enough to contain the post-COVID far right and also win an election.

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

I suppose this is giving this post more attention than it deserves (though you do still see this sentiment around elsewhere) but this kind of rabid small-r republicanism is so empty and odd in a modern world where constitutional monarchies have clearly been part of the democratic club for a century.

Right! There's a core claim here - that a war (the 2003 invasion of Iraq) which was supposed to increase stability in the region in fact destabilized it - that is very clearly right and a devastating indictment of W. Bush's foreign policy. But it gets washed out in this sort of exaggeration.
