Overheard train chat between two tough-looking youths: Youth one: “I got déjà vu, man. I saw this dog and felt like I’d seen it before.” Youth two: “That’s not déjà vu. You just saw a dog twice.”

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

I am often asked “What, if push came to shove, is your favourite stile you have climbed over on a walk in the countryside?” and it’s always an easy question to answer, since there can only ever be one winner.
A stile in the middle of a field, surrounded by no hedging or fence.

Ehhh, #DoctorWho starting in mid-April means tea-time isn't light enough to make it fun or dark enough to make it spooky. I'm moving a lot of lamps around to get an ambience going, and I'm not really feeling it. Maybe I should call my mother and ask her to shout "fish fingers are ready" at me.

They also never mean "a profoundly moving indictment of American racism", somehow.
The Norman Rockwell painting "Murder in Mississippi". This painting is entirely in black, white, and shades of grey; it depicts a standing white man supporting a kneeling Black man who is clearly injured. A second white man lies dead on the ground; multiple white men with guns, including one who is clearly a law officer, are menacing the central figures. More information is at Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_in_Mississippi_(painting)

If the US is serious about ending the housing crisis, it will dismantle the revolving door between incarceration and homelessness. It's time to put housing first instead of criminalizing vulnerable people for not having access to safe, stable, and affordable housing.
Graphic that says:
Formerly incarcerated people are 10x more likely to experience homelessness than the general population.

Homelessness also makes formerly incarcerated people more likely to be arrested & incarcerated again.

The increasing criminalization of homelessness does not create safer communities - instead, it creates a revolving door that traps some of the most vulnerable people inside the carceral system.

From a poetry collection by Mary Oliver, where after a hundred poems showcasing gentle observations on nature and animals, she hits you with this
OF THE EMPIRE
We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.
