SO good: “…we are constantly strapping in for the future, making ready each time to throw out the communities, cultural practices, and values that we have come to appreciate in their imperfections, only to be told once again that the plane must return to the gate for another unspecified checkup.”

I am wearing a dress called a cocoon dress, it's like a tent of soft fabric (made in Canada!). It's ridiculous as an actual dress but my instinct to buy it has panned out, as it's a perfect dress for this occasion. And yes, ty for the suggestion, the incisions seem more intense than I thought.

My surgeon thinks the whole hospital stay in July was a rogue gallstone in a duct that referred up to the liver and then disappeared before anyone could see it on a scan. So bye bye gallstones!

Today we got an email from Microsoft that OOPSIE DAISY, Copilot, though "anonymous", might be sharing the confidential stuff you put in it elsewhere. We work with other people's information, this is terrible. (And why I was always suspicious and stayed away from copilot etc etc).

AI has talked kids into suicide, fueled paranoid delusional that led to murder, degraded education quality in both k-12 and higher ed, run roughshod over copyright law, increased spam, fueled spam, fueled fraud, degraded the environment, put people out of work, the list goes on and on.

you may have noticed that animation has never been more in-demand & in the zeitgeist and yet, seemingly, never have media conglomerates been less willing to produce it. you may also notice these guys get multimillion dollar severance packages after they gut a studio. there is probably no connection

(CW for graphic discussion of execution) This was a good, though obviously upsetting, read. Especially this part by Corinna Barrett Lain, about why states fight to keep using lethal injection despite multiple high profile failures slate.com/news-and-pol...
Why are they sticking with this? My conclusion is lethal injection just does one thing well, only one. It hides the violence of state killing. With lethal injection, you don't have the blood of the firing squad. You don't have the sickly smell of burning flesh like you do with the electric chair, or people gasping with the gas mask, or with the gas chamber. With lethal injection, we get to tell ourselves that these people are just falling into a forever sleep.
I was thinking of this saying that | had read, "The heart stops reluctantly." And I was like, Oh, right, the heart stops reluctantly. Before a person is ready to die on their own, it takes physical force to stop the heart from beating. It takes violence to stop the heart from beating. And it could be a car accident or a homicide or an execution, but it takes violence. And what's special about lethal injection is it hides the violence.

Guess I need to update this post from a couple of weeks ago. Is that $70 billion in subsidies? (30 ongoing + 40 for pipeline) So the entire value of o&g to the Canadian economy is given straight back to big oil? Absolutely corrupt behaviour & a climate crime.
Fun fact. Canada's arts & culture gdp is basically the same as oil & gas at about $70 billion.

Direct funding for the arts & culture is about $700 million annually

albertaviews.ca/arts-publicl...

It's up to $30 billion for oil & gas depending on how you count

Basically using LLMs and agentic ai is a massive security risk and no one should do so basically ever and these companies should be prosecuted for hacking. Also two-party consent should extend to all electronic communications.

People are not balanced right now. I think we are seeing so many "reactions" due to people getting fed so many ideas from bad algos & sources meant to make them angry. Uncertainty makes ppl angry and almost...delusional. That's the closest word. It's destabilizing to hear it in someone you know.
