Brick and mortar businesses are grueling. One wrong step can doom them because they have no cushion. Any tech that helps them (us) understand the business better and compete against bigger, well-funded chains, sounds pretty awesome, tbh. (I have no idea if the specific tech here is any good tho)

California Environmentalism is easy to understand. State law mandates that every parking garage display a prominent warning that parking garages are known to the State of California to Cause Cancer. At the same time, every city has a law that requires all new buildings to include parking garages.

The Pro-MHA Seattle Times Editorial board acknowledges that MHA fees get passed onto renters, and supports it because of that, lol.

Yup. This is the natural outcome of excessive proceduralism because the procedural bodies will inevitably always be controlled by the most zealous busybodies with too much free time. Electeds delegate these powers away because it’s easier to dodge responsibility. But it all needs to be pulled back.

There is a legal mandate that goes into effect this year for all city budgets to be balanced for 3 years (not just 1). Any mayor would have had to balance this budget through 2030.

Popped into Seattle City Council public comment today to support the MHA tax reduction (regressive tax on housing) and oppose the addition of MHA to all former single family zones. Look at that crowd! Nearly every builder in the whole damn city showed up and they all had “proud YIMBY” signs. 🤩

I take a different perspective than Will on this. I think politicians have to be taking conspicuous actions to expand the pie and _lower_ prices if they want to be taken seriously on economy. Trump is doing the opposite right now, the real prices matter much less. Dems generally drive prices up.

MHA is a regressive tax on housing, UCLA research shows it, at best leads to an 80% reduction in housing construction. We all agree we’re in a housing crisis in Seattle. So let’s unpack what this legislation from CM Foster does:

For people who don't live in California, let me explain the story of 2150 Avy Ave. The owner could be 1. A retiree who bought early 2. The child of a retiree who inherited the house before 2021 and lives in it 3. The child of a retiree who inherited the house before 2021 and rents it out for $5K/mo

City and state government politics absolutely revolve around the contractors, both for-profit and non-profit, that consume tax dollars. If voters aren’t focused on an issue, it’s nearly guaranteed the State is being fleeced, as that’s the lowest friction choice for the electeds.

I don’t think the lessons of social justice for decisionmakers have set in if the end goals remain the same but the rhetoric sounds more social justice-y. “I’m not throwing you under the bus, I’m simply relocating you under the diesel-electric mass transportation vehicle”

The 2030 census reapportionment is going to be brutal for Dems. We’re going to lose an entire swing state of EVs, almost entirely because TX passes pro-housing laws and CA and NY don’t. (But thank you YIMBYs for fighting and trying!)

Trump’s vote-by-mail “reforms” are working exactly as intended: “However, we are seeing serious problems with mail delivery through the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Voters are following all the rules, but mail delays are causing many ballots to arrive way too late.”

People clearly feel unsafe when there are a bunch of visible fent dens and locked products at the grocery store, and don’t experience murders or other crimes. You can make the justice system as restorative and anti-carceral as you want if you just handle a few superficial things! Easy trade.

Power in California is expensive because of urban sprawl and wildfires. And because of highly regressive “net metering” for solar, that shifts cost to poor households.

Zoning codes would never allow the iconic buildings we now cherish. Seattle’s famous Smith Tower could never be rebuilt on this site because it’s too tall, has too much area, doesn’t step back upper floors, and doesn’t have a gargantuan loading dock

Visited a friend in a new development in Bothell. It was all the density of the city with none of the walkabilty. Fine as an affordability matter, but why are we causing this outcome? Some of my AV optimism comes from hoping to break the car spell that drives at least some of it.

Op-Ed: Sound Transit Gave Us a Ballard Date. Here’s How To Accelerate It.
Sound Transit recently revealed light rail won't reach Ballard until "around 2060" without further intervention. Seattle Subway lays out a path to greatly accelerate this delivery date, which they call “wildly unacceptable.”
