Soooo…do we do anything different? Or nah?

I also struggle with technical aspects of films about stuff I know because I want them to be interesting on my level, but that would make them inscrutable to normal people. In other words, of the course the words guy would find the words too simple in a mass market movie. 😆

Brick and mortar businesses are grueling. One wrong step can doom them because they have no cushion. Any tech that helps them (us) understand the business better and compete against bigger, well-funded chains, sounds pretty awesome, tbh. (I have no idea if the specific tech here is any good tho)

Also, isn't it sort of racially reductive to assume that the only way people of color can live in a neighborhood is on a government handout? Like, it seems condescending to import low income families of a specific race when the kids move up and away, and pretend that's the same community.

Isn't it a little weird to try and use public policy to lock in the ethnic neighborhood segregations of the 1960s?

Climate went off the rails because the narrative about it ended up being about shared sacrifice, i.e., "this will make your life worse." I don't think that's true, but that's what was sold! So now it's politically toxic because people like good things and hate bad things. Bummer. :(

California Environmentalism is easy to understand. State law mandates that every parking garage display a prominent warning that parking garages are known to the State of California to Cause Cancer. At the same time, every city has a law that requires all new buildings to include parking garages.

You can at least boost that to 240V at 15A for 2x the heating power. Or if it’s 12ga wire, 20A. But be careful with the heat pump water heaters. They’re situational. If they are in a conditioned space, they’re just sucking heat that has to be replaced by your furnace.

The Pro-MHA Seattle Times Editorial board acknowledges that MHA fees get passed onto renters, and supports it because of that, lol.

Fair, though I guess I’d say the amount by which it is governed by the bureaucrats is overstated most of the time. They’re following political will and sane-washing it.

Yup. This is the natural outcome of excessive proceduralism because the procedural bodies will inevitably always be controlled by the most zealous busybodies with too much free time. Electeds delegate these powers away because it’s easier to dodge responsibility. But it all needs to be pulled back.

Yeah, it’s never been actually technocratic. Urban planning as a profession has been divorced from reality for its entire existence.

There is a legal mandate that goes into effect this year for all city budgets to be balanced for 3 years (not just 1). Any mayor would have had to balance this budget through 2030.

Popped into Seattle City Council public comment today to support the MHA tax reduction (regressive tax on housing) and oppose the addition of MHA to all former single family zones. Look at that crowd! Nearly every builder in the whole damn city showed up and they all had “proud YIMBY” signs. 🤩

Two things were different back in 1981: 1) we’ve made homes structurally much more expensive due to regulatory requirements 2) land was much cheaper then because of the suburban expansion

To steel man this slightly, there’s a narrow path where you believe OTA exploits are thoroughly tested for and patched, but physical ones are not given that level of scrutiny. Also, nation-state level stuff has definitely happened over the usb port.

I take a different perspective than Will on this. I think politicians have to be taking conspicuous actions to expand the pie and _lower_ prices if they want to be taken seriously on economy. Trump is doing the opposite right now, the real prices matter much less. Dems generally drive prices up.

I think what’s obvious in this proposal is that it’s a giveaway to lobbyists that camp out at City Hall and mildly net negative for actual people who need housing.

Logan Bowers @loganb.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Neither proposal is more or less real, and as you know, policy frequently sails as multiple ordinances for purely mechanical reasons. But these items should be considered as a pair.
020
Logan Bowers @loganb.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Both are “information” items to preview future legislation (including the draft ordinance). So the way to think about this is that the two information items together are a presently non-binding policy package, being previewed for a real drafting and introduction later.

1) It removes a regressive tax from _existing_, helping developers underwater on their projects. 2) It trades a 60% tax cut, for a new tax: an unfunded mandate to build monetary-losing 2 bed apartments. A wash. 3) It extends the regressive MHA housing tax to all NR zones, killing development…

Logan Bowers @loganb.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
MHA is a regressive tax on housing, UCLA research shows it, at best leads to an 80% reduction in housing construction. We all agree we’re in a housing crisis in Seattle. So let’s unpack what this legislation from CM Foster does:

Idk, I kinda don’t like the hearsay nature of these claims. I feel like there should be at least some credible evidence in the public record before torching someone’s reputation. Unchecked social purity mobs rarely work out well, so it’s good to have some norms about restraint.

Lina Khan posted recently basically saying, “we can already reign in these companies with the laws we have,” and Taylor Lorenz has been vocally anti-AI regs, but I’m not sure her position. Matt Stoller has expressed skepticism too, but I try not to read anything from him, so can’t comment.

City and state government politics absolutely revolve around the contractors, both for-profit and non-profit, that consume tax dollars. If voters aren’t focused on an issue, it’s nearly guaranteed the State is being fleeced, as that’s the lowest friction choice for the electeds.

Seattle has about 10k AirBnBs out of a total housing stock of 400,000. So it’s a drop in the bucket and in any case people need to be able to visit here too.

Logan Bowers @loganb.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Okay, I guess we agree the way is to build more housing. I said, “we need to build 20k homes” and you said “that’s not the only way,” so I thought we were disagreeing on that point.

Which city has that worked in? Approximately every housing unit is occupied in Seattle. The only way to house everyone currently in homes AND house everyone who is homeless is to add about 20-40k more homes.

I don’t think the lessons of social justice for decisionmakers have set in if the end goals remain the same but the rhetoric sounds more social justice-y. “I’m not throwing you under the bus, I’m simply relocating you under the diesel-electric mass transportation vehicle”
