not a single person I’ve met irl since i moved to a new city a few weeks ago has brought up AI in conversation, not even to complain about it, not even when i say i am a computer scientist. possibly i am just putting myself in the right social situations this time. or maybe SF was really just Hell

AI safety people are always like "what if they hack the nukes" instead of "what if self-propagating LLM script kiddie swarms hack the worst-secured 1% of internet-connected industrial control hardware and casualtymaxx" & it's because only one of those is an ad for the capabilities of frontier models

i don't think we spend enough imagining how quiet and idyllic life would be if we flipped the ratio of bike/transit : car infrastructure.

New working paper w/ Hanna Folsz In Jan 2025 Trump issued an executive order targeting corporate DEI programs. Many companies ended DEI fearing financial risk We find that firms that kept DEI performed just as well in financial markets, revenue, etc democracypolicylab.berkeley.edu/wp-content/u...
The Trump administration has used executive authority to influence the behavior of civil society organizations such as law firms, universities, and corporations.
Do corporations that resist executive orders perform worse financially? In January 2025, the Trump administration issued an executive order directing federal
agencies to investigate and compel firms to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Some firms complied with the order, whereas other firms
resisted by reaffirming their DEI programs. We find that S&P 500 firms that
maintained their DEI programs performed just as well as compliant firms, both
in terms of stock market returns and revenue. The results are robust across various measures of maintaining DEI, including measures based on executives’ public
statements about DEI programs, interest group ratings, firm financial statements,
and shareholder rejections of anti-DEI resolutions. The results suggest that, at
least in some areas, firms can resist pressure from the executive branch with
minimal costs to financial performance.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

If a picture can speak a thousand words, these are the two pictures I'd pick to express the value of Woke 1.1 and the problem of Woke 1.2:
Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid take a knee wearing their 49ers uniforms during the national anthem.Nancy Pelosi and members of the House and Senate take a knee in the entrance to the Capitol wearing kente cloth scarves.

Hey, if you're a CA voter who hasn't returned your ballot, and you also want to pass the #BillionaireTax, then there is a great strategic voting opportunity here. If there are no R governor candidates on the ballot in November, then the sub-tabs of recent polling suggest the tax wins easily.

The Squamish people of what is now Vancouver were illegally dispossessed of their land 100 years ago. They sued, got the land back, and used their sovereignty to ignore local zoning and build 6,000 new homes over the loud objections of nearby wealthy NIMBYs. Now other tribes are getting in the game.
