Don’t listen to the mayor or the district downplay the reliance on AI in the classroom. Listen to the DONOR’s own priorities, which are driving the adoption of this policy. “We want to be deeply in the classes,” [Paul] English said, “and ultimately, we want every teacher to be using AI.”

The fast-moving technology has some educators, parents, and students worried, even as others argue there’s room for experimentation.

I’m also a big fan of seeing 1 (or both) LIs explore their feelings about the other (and about whatever barriers the relationship is going to face) through interactions w/secondary characters. Don’t tell ME stuff, tell your friend/mom/cousin/grandpa/neighbor!

I watched less than half the movie, so I am not entirely clear on its prevailing moral. On the one hand, the tech CEO was transparently evil-coded. OTOH all the child characters were generally thrilled with their personal robots and there was a lot of anthropomorphizing.

Last year, one of the classes I work with earned a movie day, and they picked an animated film where all the kids had personal robots that looked pretty much like this mascot.

Since the “a” appears to be based on the spelling of the Latin root, we can almost certainly blame white men for this. (By and large, the white dudes who drove the standardization of English spelling were extremely enthusiastic about trying to bring English spelling closer to Latin where possible.)

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. The horshoe crab swims away and says, “good luck tho”

Sure, feedback & pacing can be built into tech, but as you point out, the relationships at the heart of teaching & learning mean that human mediation frequently makes both of those things better.

I don’t want students “inquiring” about silent e. That’s not interesting! I want them to be able to read & spell words with silent e so that they can encounter & share & inquire about ideas that are worth reading and writing about!

Liz Wise @lizwise.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Yes, exactly. And I think the bit right before that is really telling, bc it is within our power (and indeed, is our obligation) to make sure that foundational knowledge base is built & strong, so that students have that resource for inquiry.

All of which are interactive experiences that both student(s) and teacher(s) have a role in! Tech can’t match the way we give feedback, the way we honor the understandings our human students bring or are developing, the way we make adjustments in real time.

And when I say I’m in favor of repeated practice, I don’t mean answering multiple choice questions on a computer, I mean applying what was just learned so it sticks. Read and spell words with that vowel team, identify some nouns, write a topic sentence.

Liz Wise @lizwise.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Rather, I’m talking about explicitly teaching things like phoneme-grapheme correspondences, spelling conventions, syllable division, standard grammar, mechanics, etc. Even up to knowledge of writing at a really basic level, i.e. what is a topic sentence, a paragraph, etc.
130
Liz Wise @lizwise.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
When I say I think explicit instruction matters, I’m not talking about taking experimentation out of science class, or going back to teaching social studies the way I learned it (read a textbook, listen to a lecture, do a worksheet, take a test).
120
Liz Wise @lizwise.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
I think my biggest immediate takeaway is: it remains important to be specific about my own beliefs when communicating w/others, & to continue to be critical about how those practices I value are being co-opted by actors who are trying to extract 💵 or usher in changes that undermine education.

Liz Wise @lizwise.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
This was interesting to me as someone who very much believes in the value of explicit instruction and repeated practice in learning, but who is also unenthused about most edtech and rejects the idea of students as empty vessels.
