The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

I like this. Really clearly explains how you could introduce in your classroom and has me thinking about how to adapt this technique for Early Years. Listening is one of the skills we’re really working hard on at the moment.

First full time week completed! Reception is so exhausting at this time of year, but already seeing so much progress as they learn the routines of school. And Friday afternoon gate duty, waving and chatting to children from past classes as they went home in the sunshine, was a joy and a privilege.

8 years ago, I tweeted side-by-side maps from NASA GISS showing global temperatures in 1976 and 2018 – both hot summers in the UK. It subsequently went viral and was printed in the Daily Mail! The 2026 version is stark. Two locally extreme summers separated by 50 years of global climate change.

I loved how so many posts about Dolly Parton were about the good, kind things she’d done. So, I’ve grabbed a stack of kids’ books I bought for projects and I’m gonna drop them at my local Primary School. It’s not much, but it's something. 🙂 Sharing if anyone wants to do the same. 👍 #edusky #UKEd

I’m doing this puzzle adventure book with R and totally stumped by this puzzle. You have to go through alternating sun and storm gates to get through the maze and we cannot figure out a route. Any ideas? It’s driving me crazy!

Part of petrichor, the delish earthy smell released when rain hits parched ground, is geosmin,a compound from soil bacteria-human👃s can detect it in lower concentrations than sharks can detect blood in water. Seeking out water on dry plains was essential for our ancestors. Here’s a geosmin molecule:

I wouldn't call myself a cartoonist, but I had the vision and just needed it to be on paper to the best of my ability.
A hand drawn eight panel cartoon. First two panels are a colander sitting frowning on a shelf. Then the colander is frowning straining pasta, then three more panels of frowning sitting on a shelf. Then a big panel where it's projecting a bunch of crescent eclipse shapes and smiling with speech bubbles around saying "Wow! Look! Amazing! Beautiful!" And then one final panel where it's sitting on a shelf smiling.

This is fucking terrifying
Separate research supports the concern. Anat Perry, a Helen Putnam Fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute and associate professor of psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, co-authored a paper in Science examining how sycophantic AI responses erode users’ ability to calibrate their own judgment. The paper found that when AI systems consistently affirm a user’s position, the user’s capacity for independent evaluation degrades over time.

Joanna Stern, NBC’s chief technology analyst and author of “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” has documented the creep of AI dependency in daily life. Her reporting has shown how users begin with low-stakes queries, such as what to cook for dinner or what to wear, and gradually escalate to consequential decisions about careers, finances, and relationships. The trajectory from convenience to reliance is difficult to reverse once established.

What happened to Britain’s window shades?
There's a heatwave happening across Europe at the moment, and in my day job with schools there's one topic that everyone want to talk about: overheating. It's chronic in British schools, and very common across hospitals and healthcare facilities, as well as ordinary homes. In discussions about this problem, the go-to solution is air conditioning. Our buildings overheat, therefore we need air conditioning.

I do love that AI inadvertently confirms that our brains work like a muscle, too — use it or lose it. In this way relying on AI is like using a robot to lift weights, like running a marathon in a Honda Civic. You get nothing out of it.

This is exactly why I'm so reluctant to use AI. It might be a shortcut in the moment, but in the long run it'll leave us worse off, deskilled and out of practice. I like using my own brain!
