47 year old today -- to this iconic science cover art! It's a train of radio pulses that were generated by the pulsar CP 1919 - the first pulsar ever discovered by Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell. Each line represents a single rotation of the star, with the beam detected by radio telescopes. 📡🔭🧪

Intelligent
2 Blue Jays conversing in a spruce. First Jay asks "What if we aren't the only intelligent species in the universe? What would they be like?" The second replies "Let's see... they'd need to be good at problem solving, and to have advanced communication skills, a social structure, self-awareness..." "... the ability to fly?" continues the first Jay. "That goes without saying!" exclaims the second. The first states confidently "And a strong beak, of course". To which the second responds rhetorically "How could you do anything intelligent without a strong beak?"

A birdwatcher and photographer managed to capture the unusual behaviour of two great crested grebes hunting common chiffchaffs. The grebes would stealthily approach the chiffchaffs (hunting for inverts over the water's surface), catch one, drown it, then swallow it – albeit with difficulty.

On a Komodo night dive buzzing with interesting life, l thought this cute little moray was a common species & ignored it. My partner luckily took a few shots: seems it's the little-known Gymnothorax robinsi. Too rare to be in fish books, perhaps the 3rd photo of a live specimen on the internet.

Male Australasian Bitterns are highly territorial in the breeding season. Many are now on their way from the Riverina’s rice fields to coastal wetlands in NSW, VIC and SA for winter. Latest Australian population estimate is only 1300 (+~700 in NZ) but conservation action is building. Glorious birds.

Did you know... there are freshwater jellyfish? I find them in many lakes I study. Too small to sting us, they live as polyps on the bottom, producing medusae ("jellyfish") when conditions are right. My photos aren't great, so enjoy this one by Jan Hamrsky, www.lifeinfreshwater.net.
