A Minnesota ‘lake killer’ surfaced 11 years ago. There’s still no long-term fix.
If caught early, starry stonewort is no longer considered a death sentence for lakes. Still, a decade after it was first discovered in Minnesota, it remains a costly problem with no permanent cure.

🤷‍♀️❓🌿 Is this aquatic plant invasive? Get your hands on our NEW free-to-download identification cards for the invasive plants you're most likely to see in Michigan lakes, streams, and wetlands. Each card compares the invasive species with a similar native species. www.canr.msu.edu/news/is-this...
Images of the invasive species side of all 6 cards: curly-leaf pondweed, hydrilla, water hyacinth, starry stonewort, European frog-bit, Eurasian watermilfoil.Images of the native species side of all 6 cards: Clasping-leaf pondweed, Common waterweed, muskgrass, white water lily, and northern watermilfoil. Water lettuce also appears, although invasive, because it appears on the reverse of invasive Water Hyacinth.

We often hear from folks who think they've caught a snakehead in Michigan. It's never a snakehead - it's nearly always a bowfin, or, occasionally, a burbot. Unfortunately, the fish often don't survive the encounter due to the misidentification. Check out this handy article to learn the differences!

That's a wrap on the 2026 MiCorps Aquatic Invasive Species Detection Blitz! Over 100 people submitted some really great observations this year, and we’re excited to see the final results. Before it gets too official, though, we had to share a few honorable mentions that didn’t quite make the cut...

Lakes and Reservoirs
A lake really is just another component of Earth's surface water. A lake is where surface-water runoff and groundwater seepage have accumulated in a low spot, relative to the surrounding countryside.
