A chart whose vertical axis shows the ratio of actual funding of US major diseases in 2017 versus the amount appropriate for its disease burden and whose horizontal axis is the list of disease, in order of increasing funding per disease burden. ME/CFS is at the bottom, with its actual funding at 7.3% of what would be fair, compared to its burden on sufferers, their caregivers, and society.

It's a kind of living death, a fuzzy "lock-in" that no one believes you have. NIH researchers who calculate spending versus disease burden have found it to be grotesquely underfunded. (A study in 2020 found it ranked at the bottom of the charts for the most underfunded major disorders in the US.)

I'm a big believer in finding moments of joy in the now, and I have a lot to be thankful for. But ME/CFS is such a devastating disorder—not just for us sufferers, but also for our caregivers. And without more funding to find biomarkers, official treatments and a cure, our lives are pretty grim.
